In an embodiment, a first foam material may be urged through an extrusion channel, and a first coating material may be fed to an applicator in communication with the extrusion channel to apply a visible coating on a region of the outer surface of the foam material. The region is a fraction of a perimeter of the outer surface of the first foam material. In an embodiment, the applicator may be rotated relative to the first foam material to impart a visible helical band on the extruded foam article.

The invention enables the extrusion of pattern on the inside of hollow profiles and the extrusion of multiple profiles in one tool, because 80-98% of the radial bearing forces are eliminated, allowing the installation of rotary dies where not previously possible, and almost unlimited opportunities in increased profile width.

The periphery may be provided with teeth which furrow the skin layer, exposing the primary polymer underneath, or the periphery may be comprise a plurality of facets meeting at sharp internal corners, wherein the skin layer is forced into the corners and is breached at the centers of the facets, again exposing the primary polymer underneath in longitudinal stripes. By causing the die sub-assembly to rotate during extrusion, a spirally striped extrusion is formed.
