A method and an apparatus are provided for taking heat images of heat sealed seams. Such seams are made in heat sealing stations and in particular when making covers or lids, respectively, for containers, being provided with a tear-off foil that closes the container up to the first use of its contents. For ascertaining the air-tightness of the heat sealed seam during manufacturing a heat image of the seam is taken while the seam is still hot. By evaluating the image it can be detected whether the temperature of the seam is within a range that assures a correct seam or has exceeded an upper or lower limit for the temperature which is indicative of a defective heat sealed seam. Defective objects can then be discarded based on the evaluation of the heat image. This test of the correctness of the heat sealing is much faster than a pressure differential test testing the actual air tightness of the seam and can thus be used in high speed manufacturing apparatus for covers or lids, respectively.

A motor-driven and controlled packaging machine for forming pouches from a web of material. The controls allow the machine to be run with either a continuously or intermittently advancing web. Seal bars are mounted on moveable carriages which move with the web as they form the seals. A web unwind is servo controlled to minimize the amount of festoon section needed when operating in intermittent mode. Each registration-related component of the machine has a dedicated sensor for independently registering each component with the web. Accordingly, the machine may regain registration with minimal web waste and can be quickly and easily repositioned for different pouch sizes.

The present invention relates to a machine for sealing material in sheets, which have been pre-coated with beads of glue affected by heat, preferably electronically printed toner beads, the beads coming into engagement with each other after folding the sheet into such as the configuration of an envelope or the like, the sheet then being advanced into the machine for adhering the beads to each other. In accordance with the invention, the machine includes a first sealing zone (12) and a second sealing zone (13), which are arranged at 90.degree. to each other with advancing means (36,38, 34,47) for conveying the respective sheet through the sealing zones, each sealing zone having one or more pairs of rotationally driven sealing discs (14,15,18,19,23,26). Each pair of sealing discs includes a first disc (14,15,23) heated by heating means, and a second, preferably freely rotating, disc (18,19,26) engaging against the first disc with a pre-settable pressure. In this way there is heat transfer from the first sealing disc to the second sealing disc so that when a sheet folded to envelope configuration is taken through the machine with the aid of said advancing means, the toner beads situated in this advancing direction are first caused to pass through respectively between said first sealing zone and in that the envelope is then given a new advancing direction at 90.degree. to the previous one, the toner beads in the new direction being caused to pass through the second sealing zone.

A method of making parts of shoes and articles of wearing apparel of conventional materials such as leather and splits thereof, woven and non-woven fibrous materials, synthetic materials and the like to provide a surface configuration corresponding to a master pattern which desirably is to be imitated, comprising confining a layer of compressible absorbent material and a base plastic between a backing layer of which the part is to be comprised and a mold containing a cavity embodying the surface configuration to be reproduced on the surface of the backing layer, applying pressure and heat to cause the compressible absorbent material and the base plastic to become integrated with the backing layer, allowing the plastic to stabilize and stripping the composite structure from the mold. According to the method the compressible absobent material may be in the form of a batt of thermoplastic fibers or foam and the base plastic may be a thermoplastic in liquid, paste, sheet or solid dry blend form. Desirably, a thin layer of dissolved plastic or plastic monomer is sprayed on the surface of the mold cavity prior to disposition of the base thermoplastic and compressible absorbent layer between the backing layer and the mold and optionally a pigmented plastic may be deposited in the mold cavity at predetermined areas. The mold is prepared by casting a material having a lower dielectric constant than the plastic employed on a master pattern embodying the configuration to be imparted to the backing layer and preferably the aforesaid material of the mold is silicone rubber.
