A biomass pyrolysis process is provided in which biomass feedstock is mixed with a heat carrier. The heat carrier at least partly comprises char. The ratio by weight of biomass to char is in the range 1:1 to 1:20. The process may be carried out by in a screw/auger pyrolysis reactor in which the solid feedstock components are conveyed along the reactor by a first screw. A second screw conveys at least a portion of the solid products of the biomass pyrolysis back to a heat transfer medium input port. Thus, the heat transfer medium includes char from the biomass pyrolysis.

A method for enhancing the treatment of lignocellulose-containing materials by biotreatment wherein such lignocellulose-containing materials, normally resistant to biotreatment, are first subjected to a low-temperature, long-residence time pyrolysis at about 175° C. to about 325° C. for about 0.1 hour to about 2.0 hours, wherein a substantial portion of the incoming material is distilled into water-soluble compounds amenable to anaerobic biotreatment. Exemplary applications of the method include pyrolytic pre-treatment of wastewater sludges, cellulosic wastes, wood, peat, plant residues, low-grade coal, and the like to enhance methane gas production in anaerobic digestion and/or oxygen-limited or oxygen-starved fermentation to produce ethanol.

This invention relates to a power recovery process in waste steam/CO2 reformers whereby a waste stream can be made to release energy without having to burn the waste or the syngas. This invention does not make use of fuel cells as its critical component but makes use of highly exothermic chemical reactors using syngas to produce large amounts of heat, such as Fischer-Tropsch. It also relates to control or elimination of the emissions of greenhouse gases in the power recovery process of this invention with the goal of producing energy in the future carbonless world economy. A New Concept for a duplex kiln was developed that has the combined functionality of steam/CO2 reforming, heat transfer, solids removal, filtration, and heat recovery. New methods of carbon-sequestering where the syngas produced by steam/CO2 reforming can be used in Fischer-Tropsch processes that make high-carbon content compounds while recycling the methane and lighter hydrocarbons back to the reformer to further produce syngas at a higher H2/CO ratio.

Wastes mainly containing any one or two or more of raw garbage, waste lumber, paper diapers, waste plastics, and organic sludge discharged from the food industry, common houses, etc. are exposed to high-temperature steam of 510 to 900° C. in an oxygen-free state, preferably while being stirred, to be carbonized. Thereby, the amount of wastes is reduced safely and efficiently with no fear of generating harmful substances such as dioxin, and moreover the carbonized wastes can be reused effectively for applications to fuel or the like.

An integrated apparatus for the gasification of coal alone or with other carbon-containing materials such as solid municipal wastes, biomass and sewage sludges, wherein the endothermic heat required by the gasification reaction is supplied at least in a significant part by the exothermic reaction of CaO in the form of calcined lime or dolomite with carbon dioxide. The CO.sub.2 is recycled to provide a high CO.sub.2 vapor pressure for the exothermic reaction. The calcium carbonate formed in the reaction is decomposed in a combustor to produce the CaO which is recycled to the gasification stage.

A material treating apparatus, such as an incinerator, incorporating an auger having an internal air supply system and an internal heat transfer mechanism. The incinerator includes a cylindrical combustion chamber containing a rotatable auger, and waste material is fed to one end of the combustion chamber and is conveyed through the chamber by the auger, while ash and non-combustible residue are discharged from the opposite end of the chamber. The auger is composed of a tubular shaft which carries a hollow spiral flight. Air is introduced into the downstream end of the shaft and flows through the hollow flight and is discharged through outlet ports in the periphery of the flight into the combustion chamber. To cool the auger, water flows within internal passages in the hollow flight. The flight is formed with a forward wall facing downstream and a rear wall which is spaced from the forward wall to define a central air passage. Both the forward and rear walls are composed of generally parallel wall panels which define a plurality of radially spaced water passages which extend the length of the flight. Ports interconnect the water passages and are arranged so that the greatest volume of water flows in the outermost passage.

There is a mixing chamber for receiving through an opening synthetic gases from the primary chamber and comprising an air inlet fan for adding oxygen for ignition. There is also a secondary chamber linked with the mixing chamber to deliver heat from combustion of gases from the mixing chamber to the hearth. An outlet valve delivers gases from the secondary chamber through a heat exchanger and to an induce draft fan.
