Certain embodiments provide a method of continuously separating particulates from a liquid medium, the method comprising exposing a liquid medium comprising particulates to electrolysis so as to cause flocculation of the particulates, and continuously separating the flocculated particulates so produced from the liquid medium, thereby continuously separating the particulates from the liquid medium.

A process for the production of fatty acid esters comprising; (a) subjecting a fatty acid or fatty acid mixture to esterification with a lower alkanol in an esterification reactor maintained under esterification conditions to form a stream comprising the corresponding lower alkyl ester or esters and recovering same; (b) recovering an overhead stream from the esterification reactor comprising unreacted lower alkanol, water, and a heavy organic content comprising one or more of lower alkyl ester and/or acids; (c) subjecting the recovered overhead stream to distillation in a first distillation column operating under first distillation conditions to separate a portion of the lower alkanol from a stream comprising the water, the remaining lower alkanol and the heavy organic content; (d) recovering the stream comprising the water, the remaining lower alkanol and the heavy organic content; and (e) subjecting the stream comprising the water, the remaining lower alkanol and the heavy organic content to distillation in a second distillation column operating under second distillation conditions to provide an overhead stream comprising lower alkanol and at least a major portion of the heavy organic content and a water stream having a reduced heavy organic and alkanol content.

Methods for the preparation of a free-flowing, storage-stable fatty acid metal salt product by forming a reactive admixture of (a) an unsaturated fatty acid glyceride feedstock; and (b) from about 1 mol to about 3 mol of at least one monovalent metal hydroxide or at least one divalent metal hydroxide; and heating the admixture to a temperature at which said fatty acid glycerides saponify to form fatty acid metals salts; wherein said monovalent metal is potassium; and wherein said divalent metal is selected from the group consisting of calcium, copper, magnesium and zinc. The fatty acid glycerides are saponified in an atmosphere in which the partial pressure of oxygen has been reduced by an amount effective to provide an improvement in storage stability until a free-flowing, storage-stage product is obtained. Storage stable metal salts of unsaturated fatty acids prepared by the inventive methods are also disclosed.

The object of the present invention is to provide a fatty acid composition whose fatty acid rate differs from that previously reported.The above object is achieved by a fatty acid composition obtained by culturing a host which is transformed with a recombinant vector carrying a nucleic acid comprising the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 1 or a nucleotide sequence encoding a protein having the amino acid sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 2 or a mutant functionally equivalent to the nucleic acid, wherein at least one or more of i) to v) shown below: i) the oleic acid content; ii) the ratio of the oleic acid content to the palmitic acid content; iii) the ratio of the total content of stearic acid and oleic acid to the palmitic acid content; iv) the ratio of the total content of stearic acid and oleic acid to the total content of palmitic acid and palmitoleic acid; and v) the n-6 fatty acid content is higher in the fatty acid rate of the fatty acid composition than in a cultured product obtained by culturing a host which is not transformed with the recombinant vector.
