An intake manifold for internal combustion engines has a plurality of independent runners emanating from a central plenum. Different sets of runners have different cross-sectional areas matched to flow velocity through the manifold at maximum torque and desired engine speeds to produce a wide high torque band. The length of each runner of each set corresponds to a harmonic frequency of the fundamental frequency of air at standard temperature, but the frequency differs for each runner set. Within each set, runner cross-sectional areas are constant throughout their length. In one embodiment, the runners curve from a plenum to their exits and in the curve each runner's cross section is regular trapezoidal with the small side of the trapezoid on the inside curve and the shape of the trapezoid effecting constant static pressure throughout the cross section.

An improved intake manifold, for uniformly charging each cylinder of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine. The manifold comprises a structure having bifurcated branches which define multiple through passageways, each passageway fluidly connecting the air inlet of the manifold to the intake valve chamber of one of the cylinders. For eight-cylinder engine, each through passageway encounters four fluid flow channels distinguishable by three bifurcations in the structure between the intake valve chamber at which the passageway terminates and the air inlet. The engine firing sequence dictates which through passageways share a fluid flow channel in common beyond each successive bifurcation in the structure. The through passageways are grouped together so that the frequency of passage of a fuel/air mixture through that portion or stage of each through passageway located immediately upstream of any given bifurcation is twice the frequency of passage of such a mixture through that stage of the through passageway located immediately downstream thereof. Downstream of each final bifurcation, a fuel/air mixture can be fed into either of two intake valve chambers but only at intervals 360 degrees of crankshaft revolution apart. Since racing engines operate with each intake valve open for roughly 300 degrees of the crankshaft revolution, only one intake valve is ever open at any given time downstream of each final bifurcation, providing a maximum separation between the closing of one intake valve and the opening of another both fed by through passageways paired at the final bifurcation.

A fuel injecting apparatus for an internal combustion engine, comprising a suction manifold and a throttle valve assembly connected to the suction manifold and provided with a fuel injector and a throttle valve. The plane of the opening of each branch pipe of the manifold is formed at a position receded downstream of a joining plane between the suction manifold and the throttle valve assembly to form space between the joining plane and the opening plane, and, at the same time, the branch pipes of the suction manifold are open at predetermined intervals around the central axis of the space which functions as part of a suction passage rotationally in the direction of the operating sequence of the integrated cylinders, whereby suction by each cylinder takes place consecutively in the same rotational direction in the space at the branch pipe inlets, and a swirl is generated at the space formed at the branch pipe inlets, thereby prompting the mixing of the fuel-air mixture and enabling uniform distribution of the mixture to each cylinder.
