If the task is digging, the first and second cylinders may be associated with tilting and lifting, respectively, and the control valves may be oriented so as to make each pump dedicated to one of the cylinders, and if demand is not being met, to then diminish power to the drivetrain to allow the tilting and lifting to be performed. The combiner valve may or may not be open during this time. If the task is not digging, the combiner valve can be opened to allow for cross-flow between the pumps and the cylinders.

In one embodiment, the hydraulic system may include a first hydraulic circuit including a first hydraulic pump with a low pressure and low flow output, switch and valve; a second hydraulic circuit including a second hydraulic pump with a high flow and high pressure output, switch and valve; and a third hydraulic circuit including a third hydraulic pump with a high flow and high pressure output, switch and valve. A valve system is provided for the load-independent control of a plurality of simultaneously operated hydraulic consumers, i.e. regardless of variations in load pressure. Fluid flow in a consumer line to each consumer passes across a compensating flow control valve, i.e. a compensator. The valve piston thereof being displaceable to the open position by a pressure downstream of a flowmeter against the opposing resistance offered by a spring and by the respective maximum load pressure of the consumers at a time. The actual highest load pressure is also available at a regulator for the common variable displacement supply pump feeding the consumers. In an attempt to ease actuation of the main valves, yet offering the capability to serve different functional requirements by slightly modifying the circuitry and to ensure that insufficient fluid supply from the pump does not exclusively affect the consumer actually subject to the maximum load, the compensator and flowmeter are arranged in a secondary flow path carrying only a fraction of the total consumer fluid supply. The main volume flow rate is regulated by the control edge of greater cross section which moves together with the pressure sensitive displacements of the compensator spool. The control edge is supplied by a valve means capable of reducing fluid pressure in a primary supply line to the pressure level downstream of the flowmeter.

Front and rear wheeled units (13, 14) of vehicle are connected together for articulated steering. Wheels on at least one unit are mounted for swivelling relative to the respective unit to provide kingpin steering in combination with articulation steering. A first embodiment has front and rear kingpin steering and articulation steering performed manually and independently of each other. In a second embodiment, a steering integrator cooperates with actuators (162, 163, 212, 213, 236, 237) which control at least the articulation steering and kingpin steering of the front wheels (22, 23) to automatically integrate two types of steering so that a controlled relationship exists between an articulation angle of the front unit (13) with respect to the rear unit (14), and swivel angles of the front wheels (22, 23) with respect to the front unit (13). A manual steering control, e.g. a steering wheel (186), controls actuation of the steering integrator. Each wheel is powered by a hydraulic motor (32, 33, 44, 45) receiving pressurized fluid from a drive apparatus comprising a flow combiner and two flow restrictors connected in parallel with each other and communicating with outlets from the wheel motors. Bypass valves (114, 115) can be used to bypass the flow combiner and flow restrictors as needed in certain applications not requiring the flow combiner, to reduce generation of heat in the hydraulic fluid.

An implement hydraulic circuit including a pilot operated flow amplifier directional valve for controlling communication between a source of primary actuating fluid and a hydraulic motor. A pair of valve spools in the valve provide separate regulated flow paths for an inlet passage and an outlet passage respectively with a pair of work ports. An actuating chamber is associated with one end of each of the spools and may each be selectively communicated with a separate source of pilot fluid for actuation of either of the spools to communicate the primary source with either side of the motor. The other spool is positioned by fluid displaced from the motor to communicate the displaced fluid to the outlet passage for return to a reservoir. The configuration of the spools and their arrangement in the valve provide a capability of metering flow from motor to reservoir to prevent overrunning of the motor.
