A transmission calibration tool automatically generates a detailed gearbox model based on a user input transmission topology description. During transmission calibration, the tool accepts inputs from transmission speed and torque sensors and estimates component torques for each gear element and each shift element. Following a shift or other transmission event, the calibration tool plots the component torques as a function of time, permitting the calibration engineer to better understand what is occurring during the event, and thus reducing the time required for calibration. The calibration tool also adapts several transmission component models and outputs the adapted models to provide insight into actual transmission component behavior.

A positioning device of a position sensor that does not require re-positioning and re-fastening at the time of mounting the position sensor. A positioning tool provided with a driving section and a positioning section is mounted on a position sensor. Then, positioning projections of the positioning section are engaged with neutral position grooves. In this state, the positioning section is rotated by the driving section so as to have the position sensor rotated together until the R-contact turns ON, so that an angle from N to R, i.e. from a neutral position to a reverse contact ON position is measured. Thereafter, the positioning section is rotated in an opposite direction to measure an angle from N to D, i.e. from a reverse contact OFF position to a drive contact ON position. Based on the measurement result, the positioning section is re-rotated by the driving section to move the position sensor to a proper neutral position. The position sensor is fastened in this condition.

A control unit has a ratio-change correction part that determines a correction in transmission control of the transmission apparatus using the rotation speed of the front wheel sensed by a front-wheel speed sensor. The control unit limits execution of the correction under a condition that an external device is connected to a connector. Such a bedding-in method is performed so as to reduce the occurrence of shifting problems or concerns occurring during the initial stages of ownership of the vehicle. More particularly, such a bedding-in method includes providing an automatic transmission having a controller that is configured to measure and learn about powertrain variation(s) and configured to adapt one or more operational parameters associated with shifting of the automatic transmission. Such a method also includes operating the vehicle according to a predetermined protocol before the vehicle reaches an end customer. Such a protocol being established so the transmission controller can learn about powertrain variations and adapt operation of the transmission to minimize effects on shifting of the transmission.
