Modern turbochargers use speed sensors to determine the shaft speed during operation. In order to replace a speed sensor in a turbocharger with journal bearings separated by a spacer, the tip of the speed sensor must be withdrawn from a window in the spacer and replaced through the same window. If the spacer turns while the sensor is removed, then the window will be out of alignment with the axis of the sensor and the sensor cannot be re-inserted through the window. An insert is provided for preventing rotation of the window in the spacer while the sensor is withdrawn. The insert also prevents wear to the speed sensor from the fluctuating contact forces transmitted from the shaft to the bearing spacer and subsequently to the speed sensor. Accordingly, the durability of the speed sensor is improved, the rate of failure and need for sensor replacement, is reduced.

A wheel-speed sensor for generating signals representative of the wheel-speed of an individual wheel on a vehicle. Unlike known wheel-speed sensors, the wheel-speed sensor in accordance with the present invention is readily serviceable without disassembly of major components of the wheel assemblies and is relatively simple, and thus less expensive to manufacture, than known wheel-speed sensors. Two embodiments of the wheel-speed sensor in accordance with the present invention are disclosed. One embodiment relates to a “between-the-rows” wheel-speed sensor which includes a magnetic exciter ring that is adapted to be affixed to a rotating axle between rolling element rows of a wheel bearing. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, the wheel-speed sensor is configured to form a grease seal which typically inserts into the end of an axle tube. A wheel-speed sensor utilizes a multiple pole magnetic exciter ring that is adapted to be attached to a rotating axle shaft. The wheel-speed sensor includes a two-piece stator which also functions as a grease seal which concentrates flux from a rotating multiple pole exciter ring. A coil of magnet wire or, alternatively, an active Hall effect device is used as the sensor and connects the two stator pieces, forming a flux bridge.

A hub assembly for coupling a road wheel of an automotive vehicle to the suspension system of the vehicle includes a housing and a hub having a spindle which extends into the housing where it rotates on a bearing having rolling elements arranged in two rows. The spindle carries a target wheel between the two rows of rolling elements, and the housing has a hole which opens into the space between the two rows. Here the housing is fitted with a sensor that monitors the rotation of the target wheel. The sensor has a bushing which is within the hole and a probe which extends from the bushing into the housing where it has a pickup area that is presented toward the target wheel. The bushing is positioned within the hole by an O-ring that is compressed between it and the surface of the hole. The bushing also has a leading surface that leads up to the O-ring and has a diameter only slightly less than the diameter of the hole. It also has a trailing surface of lesser diameter on the other side of the O-ring. The leading surface prevents the probe from deviating from its desired position and facilitates installation of the sensor in the housing.
