A starter switch is connected to the forward/backward counter and is operable, when actuated, to vary the particular stored count of the counter step-wise for the purpose of varying the operating data and for transmission to a control element, for the control thereof, which is associated with the particular treatment instrument. Upon actuation of the starter switch in order to vary the stored count of the forward/backward counter, the counting speed of the counter is increased with increasing actuation time of the starter switch by reason of the fact that the counter receives a number of counter pulses which increase per unit time.

A control circuit is adapted to control the movement of a pintle relative to the die head of extrusion apparatus. A command signal is supplied to a signal generator, which produces a first output signal in the form of a series of continuous voltage triangles, and a second output signal in the form of unit pulses. An impedance matrix contains a plurality of potentiometers which may be remotely connected to a summing amplifier. The potentiometers are arranged in a numerical order. Odd-numbered potentiometers are supplied with the triangular output signal from the signal generator. Even-numbered potentiometers are supplied with the signal generator triangular output signal, but which has been phase-shifted by half the width of one triangle. The pulse output from the signal generator is supplied to a decoder, which successively connects pairs of numerically-adjacent potentiometers with the summing amplifier during overlapping time intervals. During the cycle of operation, only a pair of numerically-adjacent potentiometers will be connected to the summing amplifier at any point in time. The output of the summing amplifier is a control signal, which may be used to control the movement of a pintle relative to a die head.

An automatic heat control apparatus for use with an electric heating element in a kiln or the like comprises a first power controller having a plurality of on and off intervals. The first controller supplies electric current to the kiln heating element during its on intervals, and further includes means for adjusting the duration of the on intervals relative to the off intervals. A constant speed electric motor is mechanically coupled to the first power controller for gradually increasing the duration of the on intervals and decreasing the duration of the off intervals; such control ensures that the temperature inside the kiln increases very gradually to lessen the risk of breaking the ceramic material being fired. Furthermore, the average speed of the motor may be controlled by means of a second power controller, similar to the first controller, having a plurality of on and off intervals which intermittently energize the motor for rotation thereof. By adjusting the duration of the on interval relative to the off intervals of the second controller, the average speed of rotation of the motor may be selectively varied to control the rate of increase in the duration of the on interval in the first controller.

A magnetic particle brake is attached to the upper portion with a shaft that carries the pinion gear of a bevel gear set located at the joint. The ring gear of the bevel gear set is fixed to the lower limb portion so that rotation of the lower limb portion about the joint causes the shaft to rotate the magnetic brake fixed to the upper portion. The brake resistance to this rotation, and therefore the resistance of the joint to rotation, may be programmed in correspondence to electrical current applied to the brake.

A device for setting an electric command variable comprising parallel circuit branches for the coarse and fine adjustment of the variable is disclosed. In particular, the fine and coarse adjustment branches each include a digital bi-directional counter and a digital-analog converter. Upon exceeding the limits of the conversion range of the digital-to-analog converter of the fine branch, the counter therein is adjusted to a value which corresponds to a middle setting of its associated converter. To prevent the latter adjustment from causing a variation of the analog command variable, a corresponding correction of the counter in the coarse branch is then made. The present device has particular application in the setting of the energizing currents in magnetic lenses of an electron microscope.

The setting device includes a digital counter, preferably a forward-backward counter, connected to the input of the control circuit through a digital-to-analog converter. A pulse source, preferably pushbutton-controlled, provides stepping pulses, either one-by-one, or in a series of pulses of variable repetition rate and/or preselectable number, for adjusting the output voltage of the setting device to achieve, for example, desired values of magnification or focus as indicated by a numeric display device connected to the output of the pulse source and/or the output of the digital counter.
