A method is provided for assembling objects using programmable robots. The robots are each operable with three or more degrees of freedom and the method includes grasping a first object with at least one of the robots, grasping a second object with at least one other robot, robotically placing the first object in a correct location with respect to the second object, and assembling the first and second objects. The objects can also be positioned in fixtures and the correct location of one object with respect to the other can be determined with respect to the fixture. The positions of both of the robots can be determined and suitable control commands provided to these robots to affect the assembling of the objects.

Method and apparatus are provided for correcting positional data produced by a machine including a member moveable in at least two co-ordinate axes. The machine includes an encoder for providing rough position data indicating the coarse position of the member in each of the axes and provision is made for moving the moveable member to a position data correction location wherein the actual position of the member is determined electro-optically in the two coordinate axes relative to a reference point external to the machine. A signal representative of the actual position is generated and used to correct the rough position data provided by the encoder.

An encoder or other position sensing means on the robot is used to control positioning of the robot into a desired position. However, because of inaccuracies such as those built up by utilizing a plurality of position sensors or those occasioned by bending, etc., the robot arm, gripper or the like may be substantially out of position. In the present invention, an electro-optical system, having a reference point external of the robot, is used to determine if the arm, gripper or the like is actually in its desired position. If it is determined to be out of its desired position, a control signal is generated to effect movement of the arm or gripper or the like so that it is actually in its desired position.

An optical laser guidance system includes a laser sensor, a controller and a plurality of actuators. The laser sensor detects a projected laser beam and sends an electrical signal representative of the position of the laser beam to the controller. The controller interprets the representative signal and uses the position of the laser beam relative to a predetermined reference position to generate a control signal to control an actuator in order to control the direction of travel of a vehicle or robot with respect to a predetermined guidepath. The laser sensor may also receive additional control messages that result in the controller generating additional control signals to control additional actuators in order to perform additional functions. The optical laser guidance system may also include a laser projection system capable of projecting a two- or three-dimensional guidepath and additional control messages.
