    摘要: A magnetic tape head assembly is provided along with a method of manufacturing a magnetic tape head. The magnetic tape head comprises a cluster of thin film inductive or magnetoresistive read/write elements, an I-block preferably made of a ceramic material, a U-bar also preferably made of a ceramic material, and a base preferably made of a ceramic or metal material. The U-bar has a substantially U-shaped form providing a recess into which the I-block and the cluster are fixed. A bottom surface of the U-bar, I-block, and cluster is fixed to the base to form a slider assembly. A top surface of the U-bar, I-block, and cluster is machined or etched to form one or more tape bearing surfaces thereon.

    摘要: A ferromagnetic pinned layer (1) kept at a fixed magnetic orientation by a pinning layer (4) is separated from a ferromagnetic free layer (3) by a Mott insulator coupling layer (2). A controllable voltage source (5) is connected between the pinned layer (1) and the free layer (3). A sublayer of the coupling layer (2) whose width (d) increases with the voltage is converted to an electrically conducting and magnetically coupling metallic state. The magnetic exchange field acting on the free layer (3) which is controlled by the applied voltage via the width (d) of the electrically conducting sublayer of the coupling layer (2) can be used to switch the free layer (3) between states of parallel and antiparallel orientations with respect to the magnetic orientation of the pinned layer (1). This is used in memory cells and in a write head.

    摘要: A data storage system is described which includes a magnetostrictive, anisotropic, ferromagnetic film whose domains exhibit a preferred orientation and are initially poled in one direction along the preferred orientation. A field is applied in opposition to the one direction, the field being insufficient to cause a switching of the poled domains. An electrostrictive film is placed in contact with the ferromagnetic film and a writing system is provided to actuate the electrostrictive film to impart stresses to the ferromagnetic film at selected locations. The induced stresses reduce the anisotropy energy of the ferromagnetic film at the selected locations and enable the domains thereat to become poled in accordance with the applied field. In one version of the invention, the writing means comprises a directed energy beam such as a laser or electron beam. In another version, the writing system employs surface acoustic waves in combination with a scanned energy beam.

    摘要: A multi-pattern is formed to have a plurality of read/write elements on a plane. A medium is formed on a single crystal of Si substrate. A motion of the head relative to the medium is made a simple harmonic motion to form linear recorded bits. This allows fabricating a storage system which provides features of small size, high recording density, high transfer rate, and short access time all at once. The recording density accomplished by the small storage system is extremely high, and may be as high as 10 gigabits per square inch.
