A stereoscopic image display system includes an image display screen for displaying images; a controller and a display driver circuit for causing left-eye images and right-eye images to be produced on the display screen in a format of image components which at any particular time define a left-eye image field interlaced with a right-eye image field; a shutter system having variable transparency shutter components positioned in front of the image display screen for defining a viewing position on the opposite side of the shutter system from the display screen. The transparency of the shutter components is controlled to attenuate the left-eye image field from view by the right eye of a viewer at the viewing position, to attenuate the right-eye image field from view by the left eye of the viewer, to enable view of the left-eye image field by the left eye of the viewer, and to enable view of the right-eye image field by the right eye of the viewer. The image components that define the left-eye image field are periodically interchanged with the image components that define the right-eye image field, and the respective transparencies of the shutter components are interchanged when the image components are interchanged so that each eye views an image having twice the resolution as would otherwise be provided. The shutter system includes a plurality of parallel arrays of variable transmittance elements for composing the shutter components.

A calibration method is provided for an observer tracking display, for instance of the autostereoscopic 3D type, which forms steerable viewing zones and which comprises a tracking system for tracking an observer and a controller for controlling the viewing zones in response to the tracking system. The viewing zones are steered to direct light in a plurality of directions in turn. The observer then moves to the optimum position for viewing the display. The tracking system determines the optimum position for each viewing zone direction and the positions and directions are stored in association with each other so as to form a mapping in the controller for controlling the viewing zones in response to the tracking system during normal use of the display.

The number of 2D views available to form an autostereoscopic 3D image is increased by using a beam combiner with two displays. Each display may comprise sequentially illuminatable light sources imaged by converging lenses for illuminating sequentially reproduced 2D images in spatial light modulators. The views are combined by the beam combiner so as to be visible to an observer in different directions corresponding to the directions from which the views were recorded during image capture.

A computer system stereoscopically projects a three dimensional object having an interface image in a space observable by a user. The user controls the movement of a physical object within the space while observing both the three dimensionally projected object and the physical object. The computer system monitors the position of the user to determine the position of the interface image within the space and further monitors the movement of the physical object to determine its position. A control signal is generated in response to the position of the physical object intersecting the position of the interface image. For example, a word processing program is indicated by an interface image such as an icon including the letter "W" three dimensionally projected within the space. The word processing program is activated when the user's finger moves within the space to touch the projected icon. The interface allows the user to observe the projected icon, physical finger and their intersection within the space. The physical object may also be extended with a stereoscopic extension image generated by the computer system in response to determining the position and orientation of the physical object.

To intermix the light from real and virtual objects, the image rendering system generates a z buffer for the real objects. The real objects are rendered with no color. A half silvered mirror is positioned to transmit the stereo images to the eyes of a viewer, and transmit light reflected from the real objects to the eyes of the viewer. An LCD array panel selectively blocks transmission of the light reflected from the real object.
