The one or more robotic devices are each configured to connect to the tools, move the tools to a desired work position, and release the tools at the work position. The tools are able to operate mechanically independently from the robotic devices to perform an operation at the position to which they are delivered. After releasing the tools the robotic devices are able to perform other operations including moving additional tools to different work positions. The one or more controllers oversee the operation of the one or more robotic devices and tools and control the overall operation on a work piece.

Tools associated with a multi-spindle machine may be positioned with respect to a plurality of workpieces on a fixture comprising a plurality of platforms and an adjustment system. Each platform may be individually moveable with respect to others in the plurality of platforms about a number of axes. The plurality of platforms may be configured to hold the plurality of workpieces in which each platform may be configured to hold a workpiece in the plurality of workpieces during operations performed by the multi-spindle machine. The adjustment system may be configured to move each of the plurality of platforms about the number of axes independently from the others in the plurality of platforms. The operations may be performed on the plurality of workpieces using the multi-spindle machine and the fixture to form a plurality of parts.

Each spindle in connected to an overhead linear drive by a mini slide. A first set of the spindles, one for each spindle station, is driven by a first X axis linear drive. A second set is driven by a second X axis linear drive. The work piece table is elongated to support work pieces for all stations, and is supported by a set of bearing guides, with outrigger bearings coupled to the table by flexure mounts that relieve stress due to differential temperature expansion rates between the work piece table and the base table. High speed spindles are employed to obtain higher productivity, with larger holes routed by router tools, eliminating the need for stocking large drill sizes on the system tool changer.

A multi-spindle machine tool having separately and vertically movable first and second spindle units which are mounted on a main body thereof movable toward and away from a workpiece. A first vertically movable table is supported by a pair of guide rails provided on a frontal surface of the main body opposing to the workpiece. The first vertically movable table can be ascended and descended by a first actuator. A second vertically movable table is supported by a pair of guide rails provided on a frontal surface of the first vertically movable table opposing to the workpiece. The second vertically movable table can be ascended and descended by a second actuator. The first and second spindle units are fixed onto the first and second vertically movable tables respectively. Thus, the area of the first vertically movable table to be supported by the main body can be set to a relatively large value and the rigidity of the first vertically movable table can be kept effectively. Further, the rigidity of the second vertically movable table can also be ensured, thereby making it possible to reliably hold the first and second spindle units and to efficiently carry out various machining processes.

The drilling machine comprises a pair of cross slides formed of two parallelepiped blocks of granite connected as a T above a horizontally stationary board carrying table. The transverse block carries two operating heads and, by means of pneumostatic bearings, guides their movement along the X-axis. The other block is guided by the machine frame by means of other pneumostatic bearings. Each head carries a spindle operable to lock and unlock the tool to permit automatic tool replacement from a corresponding tool magazine with provision for checking the integrity of the engaged tool. One of the heads can be disengaged from the X-axis servomotor and connected to the other one at a predetermined distance. Two series of equal printed circuit supports can be drilled simultaneously by using a single package of boards to be cut after the drilling or the etching. Tool changing and tool integrity checking operations can be effected simultaneously for the two operating heads.

Parallel line shafts extend horizontally below the turntables and carry bevel gears that mesh with other bevel gears secured to the turntables. The line shafts are interconnected by a train of spur gears that are, in turn, rotated by a handwheel having a pin extending into an indexing plate for locking the gear drive and thereby holding the turntables in a desired adjusted position. The vertical columns extend above the turntables at horizontallyspaced locations such that the turntables lie between the columns. Each column carries a radial arm with its extended end carrying pairs of drill means, one for each turntable. Piston and cylinder assemblies advance the drill means toward a workpiece while supported on the turntable and stops are provided to limit displacement of the drill means.
