A grinding fixture has a rotatable workpiece-holding spindle which may be indexed at any selected angular division of a circle, utilizing at least two circumferentially spaced indexers radially insertable into and retractable from the interspaces between adjacent teeth spaced at ten degree intervals around the circumferential face of an associated rotatable spindle. The indexed angle is determined by the circumferential spacing of the indexers with respect to the interspaces. Either a collet, scroll chuck or V-block may be used to mount the workpiece on the fixture.

A method of testing the concentricity of the stator bore of an electrical machine as the stator lamination layers conjointly defining the bore are stacked is disclosed. Each layer is made up of several lamination sections having respective inside edges at the bore surface. The housing of the machine is centered with respect to the longitudinal axis thereof and is equipped with an end plate and a thrust ring at the excitation side and drive side of the machine respectively. The method includes the steps of arranging markers at equal spacing on a circle described on the end plate so as to be concentric with the longitudinal axis. Markers are also arranged at equal spacing on the thrust ring. The inside edges of the lamination sections are sensed with a sensing and measuring gauge to measure the distance between the inside edge of each lamination section and markers corresponding to the section being sensed. An apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed and includes a sensing and measuring gauge engageable with the markers corresponding to the section sensed to measure the distance between the edge of the section and the markers.

Dividing attachments for angular indexing in which the attachment is provided with two coaxial plates, in one of which spherical indentations extend along a circumference, while in the other balls are fixed for entering the indentations of the first plate. The indentations are made by compacting the material of the plate to a depth which is less, than their radius, and the balls are pressed into the plate to a depth which exceeds their radius, and are embedded in the plate. The attachment is intended to be employed mainly in metalworking machines and in jigs used therewith.

BY LOOSENING THE NUT THE BUSHING IS RELEASED FOR ROTARY ADJUSTMENT OF THE POSITION OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROLLER WHICH IT SUPPORTS, WHEREBY THE RADII OF THE CENTERS OF ANY OR ALL OF THE ROLLERS MAY BE CHANGED. An apparatus and method for rotationally moving and positioning a work piece such as for dividing the workpiece into a predetermined number of equal segments. The movement is accomplished by repeatedly angularly displacing the work piece over a given swing increment of angular movement. The angular swing increment is established by summing angular displacements of each of a plurality of circular plates, each plate divided into a different number of equal segments. By a proper choice of the number of segments into which the plates are divided, and of the number of segments each plate is displaced, the angular increment can be established with extremely high precision. The angular increment may be greater than the distance between adjacent intended segments into which the work piece is divided. This allows distribution of the error of the angular increment established for each movement of the work piece about the entire periphery of the work piece, minimizing the accumulation of error between any particular pair of segments into which the work piece is divided. Additionally, a spanner disc is provided for allowing additional angular movement of the work piece within a secondary angular increment on either side of positions achieved by means of the aforesaid angular increments. This apparatus and method can be employed in any application requiring precision indexed rotational position for any purpose.
