摘要: An image forming apparatus includes: a recording head including multiple nozzles and multiple piezoelectric elements that generate pressure for causing droplets to be ejected from the nozzles; a driving-waveform generating unit that generates a driving waveform to be applied to the piezoelectric elements; first switching devices each disposed between the driving-waveform generating unit and respective one of the piezoelectric elements; second switching devices each disposed between a predetermined voltage and respective one of the piezoelectric elements; and a slight-vibration control unit. The slight-vibration control unit causes slight vibrations to be applied to a non-ejection nozzle by placing the second switch device for the non-ejection nozzle in a conduction state, and, when a predetermined period of time has elapsed after shift to the conduction state, placing the second switch device in a non-conduction state and the first switch device for the non-ejection nozzle in a conduction state.

摘要: Methods and apparatuses for controlling aerosol streams being deposited onto a substrate via pneumatic shuttering. The aerosol stream is surrounded and focused by an annular co-flowing sheath gas in the print head of the apparatus. A boost gas flows to a vacuum pump during printing of the aerosol. A valve adds the boost gas to the sheath gas at the appropriate time, and a portion of the two gases is deflected in a direction opposite to the aerosol flow direction to at least partially prevent the aerosol from passing through the deposition nozzle. Some or all of the aerosol is combined with that portion of the boost gas and sheath gas and is exhausted from the print head. By precisely balancing the flows into and out of the print head, maintaining the flow rates of the aerosol and sheath gas approximately constant, and keeping the boost gas flowing during both printing and shuttering, the transition time between printing and partial or full shuttering of the aerosol stream is minimized. The pneumatic shuttering can be combined with a mechanical shutter for faster operation. A pre-sheath gas can be used to minimize the delay between the flow of gas in the center and the flow of gas near the sides of the print head flow channel.

摘要: Marking apparatus is provided for carrying out the marking of programmed character strings upon brittle surfaces such as glass. The lines forming the characters are generated by a gas entrained stream of abrasive particles which are expressed from the opening of a nozzle located in close adjacency with the surface being marked. Switching of this abrasive particle string between marking and non-marking orientations is carried out by a diversionary flow of gas under pressure which is expressed into the stream at a rate effective to integrate with the abrasive particle and divert the marking stream away from a marking axis. A suction port is provided which removes particles subsequent to marking or having been diverted to a collection location. In one embodiment, the nozzle from which the marking particulate stream is expressed is maneuvered between lifted or retracted positions and marking positions in close adjacency with the surface being marked. As the nozzle is retracted, the particle stream issuing therefrom is diverted by the diversionary stream flow. To improve the switching action, a ledge is provided opposite the diversionary gas source. This ledge receives diverted particles for disposition through the noted suction port.

摘要: A system for reproducing color images by electronically scanning an original to control the paint-spraying of a larger duplicate image. Multiple ink spray heads scan the width of the recording medium while being controlled by width-modulation of constant air pressure supplied to the heads. Ink is contained in multiple reservoirs that are each connected to one of the spray heads by a conduit extending substantially perpendicular to the direction of travel of the spray heads. Each ink reservoir contains a sub-reservoir with a bottom surface above the level of the bottom surface of the primary reservoir. Sloping deflector plates cause ink to flow from the primary reservoir into the sub-reservoir during acceleration or deceleration of the reservoirs. The height of the ink in the reservoir is such that a meniscus of ink is maintained on the tip of the spray jet during periods when ink is not being sprayed. A fill cap in each reservoir extends into the interior of the reservoir to limit the height of the ink in the reservoir and avoid spillage. The fill cap area is preferably one inch or more in diameter to permit visual observation of the ink during filling.
