A WASTE WATER EFFLUENT CONTAINING NITRILES AND CYANIDES IS TREATED BY PASSING THROUGH AN ACCLIMATED, ACTIVATED SLUDGE CONTAINING AT LEAST ONE MICROORGANISMS CAPABLE OF DEGRADING NITRILES AND CYANIDES SELECTED FROM THE GENERA ALCALIGENES AND ACHROMOBACTER, FOR EXAMPLE, ALCALIGENES VISCOLACTIS ATCC 21698 AND ACHROMOBACTER NITRILOCLASTERS ATCC 21697 THEREBY TO PURIFY THE WASTE WATER EFFLUENT. THE WASTE WATER EFFLUENT CONTAINING 10 TO 50 P.P.M. OF CYANIDE AND 1,000 TO 2,500 P.P.M. OF COD (POTASSIUM DICHROMATE METHOD) CAN BE PURIFIED WITH A HIGH EFFICIENCY.

A colour reactant component for coating a receptor sheet of the kind used in copying paper systems is produced by incorporating in an aqueous slurry of an inorganic mineral at least one soluble salt of the metals cobalt, cerium, copper, iron, manganese, lead, indium, lanthanum, barium, antimony, beryllium, strontium, nickel, zinc, calcium cadmium, magnesium, chromium, and tin, and at least one soluble aluminate salt, so as to precipitate at least one insoluble aluminate compound in the slurry, and thereafter incorporating a binding agent selected to bond the colour reactant component to the receptor sheet.

PERCENT OF A POLAR COSOLVENT AND USING AS EMULSIFIERS NONIONIC EMULSIFIERS AT LEAST ONE OF WHICH IS AN ETHOXYLATED C8-C12 ALKYL PHENOL. IN A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT, AT LEAST ONE EMULSIFIER IS A WATER DISPERSIBLE OR WATER SOLUBLE EMULSIFIER AND IS DISPERSED IN THE WATER INTO WHICH THE CEMENT IS TO BE DISPERSED. THE ORGANIC AND POLAR SOLVENTS MAY BE STRIPPED FROM THE EMULSION ALONG WITH EXCESS WATER TO FORM LATICES SUITABLE FOR USE AS COATINGS AND FILM FORMERS.

These compositions contain salts of aromatic sulfonic acids as well as long chain (fatty) acids as essential ingredients.

Compounds useful as surfactant compounds, 2-acetoxy-4-oxaalkanesulfonates, are disclosed. The compounds, their method of preparation and use as detergents and emulsifiers are described. The compounds are particularly suited as emulsion polymerization surfactants in the emulsion polymerization of synthetic latices from vinylic monomers. The resulting latices are characterized by being low-foaming or non-foaming and find application in the preparation of adhesives foams, polishes, coatings and the like.

Mastics having excellent adhesive properties are produced by mixing a directly prepared neoprene aqueous emulsion containing 50-65 percent solids by weight and an organic, water-immiscible neoprene solvent containing a dispersed (dissolved) adhesion promoting resin in the presence of an amphoteric or cationic surfactant until the viscosity of the mixture has increased into the mastic range and a water-in-oil type of dispersion is obtained.
