摘要: An optical information recording medium, to and from which information can be recorded or reproduced at a high density, uses more number of kinds of pits than those of a conventional optical disc. A reproducing apparatus for such a medium also is devised. Information is recorded onto the recording medium by using a plurality of pit lengths which are obtained by dividing a whole frequency band below a cut-off frequency of MTF characteristic of a reproducing system into a plurality of bands in correspondence to the band characteristic and by allocating a plurality of spatial frequencies to the divided bands. The reproducing apparatus of the invention comprises an optical pickup to read out the recording information from the optical recording medium and signal demodulating means for demodulating the original data from the pulse width and amplitude value of the reproduction signal which is supplied from the optical pickup, wherein the optical pickup is designed to have an MTF characteristic such as to have one or a plurality of peaks at certain frequency positions.

摘要: In an optical signal reproducing apparatus for a conventional disc phonograph record, the groove of said record is irradiated with the light beam from a direction that varies cyclically at a constant frequency in a plane. Said plane includes both the tangential velocity vector of the groove and a normal line to the surface of the groove. At the moment that the light beam irradiates the surface of the groove from a perpendicular direction, the reflected light beam traces back the same path as that of the irradiating light beam. When a photo-detector is limited by a slit to detect only the reflected light beam tracing back the same path as the irradiating light beam, the photo-detector detects light pulses which are pulse-phase-modulated by the slope angle of the surface of the groove. The recorded signal can be reproduced by demodulating said pulse-phase-modulated pulses.

摘要: A method and apparatus for reproducing signals stored on a carrier in the form of undulations corresponding to the signals, the undulations generally being formed as a spiral groove. The undulations on the carrier are moved past a suitable radiation source, such as a light source, and the density of the radiation emanating from the undulations, which is a function of the curvature of the undulation, is detected by a suitable radiation detecting means after it passes through a suitable slit aperture arranged at a predetermined distance from the carrier surface, so that variations in the density are a function of the undulations. The undulations may be either frequency or phase modulated with respect to the signal and their amplitude can be modified as a function of their recorded wavelength in such a manner that the curved surface portions of the undulations have nearly the same focal length for all occurring wavelengths. The carrier can have at least one recording surface in which is formed a groove having a trapezoidal cross section and having its bottom surface provided with the undulations.

摘要: Disclosed is an optical turntable system for optically playing phonograph records having a recorded signal in a groove formed by a wall having a position modulated by the recorded signal. An optical unit includes an optical source providing a first light beam incident onto the wall to provide a reflected beam from the wall forming a reflected spot at a reflected position proportional to the recorded signal and also includes an optical sensor for sensing the reflected position of the reflected spot to provide an output data signal proportional to the recorded signal. The optical unit also includes a tracking assembly which functions to position the optical unit over the section of the groove of interest as the record turns.

摘要: Methods and apparatus for reversibly altering magnetic characteristics or domains of ferrimagnetic material by photomagnetic means, particularly by electron spin reversal (spin-flip). Photomagnetic electron spin reversal and inversion creating cylinder domains and their surrounding toroid domains of oppositely directed intrinsic magnetization in ferrimagnetic thin film material are achieved by means of signal modulated circularly polarized laser radiation. Three different stable conditions are detectable. The invention has particular application as a fundamentally new aproach to erasable digital data storage, providing means and methods for photomagnetically alterable and erasable data storage which can be detected by observing polarization of optical radiation directed through the ferrimagnetic material.

摘要: A method and apparatus employing optical type techniques are provided for use in reliably sensing the juxtapositional relationship between successively relevant portions of an object and a sensing unit that are relatively movable, in accurately maintaining a predetermined juxtapositional relationship between such portions of the object and the sensing unit during relative movement therebetween, and, when appropriate to the application, in also faithfully sensing other information carried by such portions of the object. The method and apparatus are characterized by eliminating any need for mechanical engagement between the sensing unit and the portions of the object to which the sensing unit responds and by utilizing only optical type coupling between such portions of the object and the sensing unit for the transfer of all information to be acquired by the sensing unit from the object. An important and currently preferred application of the method and apparatus, in which both positional and other information are sensed, is in playing ordinary phonograph records without inducing wear thereto in the course of sensing the recorded information. In the context of the mentioned application, both information for controlling the juxtapositional relationships between the record and the sensing unit with respect to both spacing and groove tracking and information with respect to the recorded audio material are sensed. In other contemplated applications, the sensing of only that information needed for controlling juxtapositional relationships may be desired, or the other information to be sensed may represent digitally encoded data, etc.

摘要: A light collector and prism that collects light from a single bulb and produces a narrow strip light beam is disclosed. The light collector and prism is formed of an elongate, integral piece of transparent material (plastic) and includes a light collecting section at one end and a prism section at the other end. Light rays emitted from a small bulb positioned in an aperture in the light collecting section are collected, to some extent (e.g., imperfectly) collimated, and directed into the prism section. The prism section extends outwardly from the collector section so as to receive the light rays collected, collimated and directed by the collecting section. The prism section includes a plurality of prism surfaces located along one edge thereof. Light rays directed by the light collecting section toward the prism section are reflected by the prism surfaces toward an opposing, narrow, light emitting edge of the prism section. Light rays emitted from the narrow edge form a narrow strip light beam. Preferably, all of the surfaces of the light collector and prism are metalized, except for the aperture within which the light source is mounted and, the narrow edge of the prism through which the narrow strip light beam is emitted.
