A fluorescent lamp (10) has an elongated glass envelope (12) with a mount structure (14) sealing each end (16) of the envelope (12). The mount structure (14) comprises a glass base (18) with two spaced apart lead-in wires (20, 22) sealed into the glass base (18) and extending into the envelope (12). An electrode (24) is connected between the lead-in wires (20, 22) within the envelope (12) and an electrode shield (26) surrounds the electrode (24). The electrode shield (26) has an open top (26a) and an open bottom (26b) and a wall (26c) that is substantially equidistantly spaced from the electrode (24). A support member (28) is attached only to the shield wall (26c) and to one of the lead-ins, for example, (22), thereby making the shield (26) electrically active when the lamp is operating.

A stroboscopic discharge tube for use in photography is provided which comprises a light-transmitting tube having its opposite ends closed, a cathode and an anode disposed within said tube, and plasma producing gas, said cathode comprising a first electric conducting stem extending through one end of the tube into the interior of the tube and a cathodic annular ring made of emissive material affixed to the stem at least by means of welding, said anode comprising a second electric conducting stem extending through the other end of the tube into the tube interior and an anodic annular ring made of impurity gas absorbing material secured to the second stem, the diameters of the cathodic and anodic rings being such that the outer peripheries of the rings are closely adjacent to the inner wall of the tube so as to define a confined discharging region between the two rings. The discharge tube of the invention provides stable light.

The variety of technologies that have been applied in the development of aonded grid cathode are described. These include chemical vapor deposition of tungsten, molybdenum, iridium BN, and Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 on both sides of a sintered tungsten cathode disk. Zirconium and titanium getters have been used to eliminate nitrogen evolution problems. The getter plates are also used as heat shields for the bonded heater. Films of Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 have been added to the insulation to prevent calcium and barium diffusion into the layer and maintain adequate resistivity and breakdown strength. Plasma etching was introduced as a method of removing Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 from the cathode pores.A new method, erosion lithography, is used for making the fine-detail grid structure, combining air erosion and lithographic techniques.

In cathode-ray tubes provided with an antenna getter on an electron-gun structure, a cathode-ray tube having antenna getter structures so improved in construction that, when the electrongun structure is advanced for insertion into said cathode-ray tube, there will be eliminated contact between the getter structures and a conductive coating on the inner surface of the tube wall, thereby to protect the conductive coating from coming off or being damaged, whereby deterioration in the innerelectrode insulation due to release of fine particle of the coating into the tube and the consequent in-tube discharge phenomenon may be prevented.

The vacuum tube subject to the present invention comprises a filament and two pairs of a grid and an anode. The filament is tensioned linearly and emitting thermoelectrons. Both of the anodes are formed on the same face on a planar substrate. The filament is arranged parallel to the planar substrate at a position facing both of the anodes. Each of the grids is arranged, such that the grid faces the anode in the same pair at a first predetermined distance from the anode and has a second predetermined distance from the filament, between the anode and the filament. The vacuum tube comprises an intermediate filament fixing part fixing the filament at a position corresponding to an intermediate point between the anodes of the two pairs.
