A munition is rendered less sensitive to inadvertent initiations by providing a polymer liner on the entire inside surface of the munition. A thermoplastic liner may be fabricated totally within an empty inert munition casing by spraying a layer of electrostatically charged low melt thermoplastic material particles over substantially the entire inside surfaces of the munition casing, which casing is first electrically grounded. After thickening the particle layer through heat, further such layers may be then applied there over, until a desired cumulative thickness liner is fabricated.

The invention provides a self-remediating projectile, i.e., an environmentally-remediating bullet, slug, shot, missile, or other ballistic projectile. An environmental remediation agent (e.g., a calcium or magnesium sulfide, phosphate, or similar material), preferably in combination with a water-soluble or biodegradable polymer, acts as a coating for a conventional projectile, rendering it less water soluble and, hence, less prone to corrosion. Also provided are a method of making a self-remediating projectile, an environmentally remediating target, and a method of remediating an area polluted with spent ammunition.

A method of reducing the erosion of surfaces of gun components on which there is flame impingement is provided. A thin coating containing metallic aluminium is applied to the surfaces, and is subsequently exposed to the hot compressed gases formed on firing. This causes diffusion of the aluminium into the surface, which reduces erosion. The coating may be applied either by the direct application of a paint containing metallic aluminium to the gun component then firing the gun, by applying such a paint to projectiles which are then fired from the gun, or by fitting a hollow frangible ring containing a composition which includes metallic aluminium around the body of the projectile, and then firing the projectile. The coating may advantageously contain aluminium silicide. A number of paints and compositions suitable for the invention are described.

A full metal jacket hollow point bullet is disclosed which has a portion of the jacket extending within the hollow open front end of the bullet. The portion of the jacket in the hollow front end has a plurality of radial slits and reinforced pointed prongs therebetween. A rearwardly extending completely empty blind bore extends from the tips of the prongs axially rearwardly into the bullet core. The base of each of the prongs is reinforced at the mouth of the front end by a fillet on each side between the ogive portion of the jacket and the base of the prong in the hollow front end. These prongs project generally radially outward upon upset of the bullet in soft tissue after passing through barrier materials such as clothing and deer hide.The jacket has a coating of copper oxide on its inner and outer surfaces which bonds the soft lead core to the jacket and minimizes lead wash.
