摘要: Metasurface elements, integrated systems incorporating such metasurface elements with light sources and/or detectors, and methods of the manufacture and operation of such optical arrangements and integrated systems are provided. Systems and methods for integrating transmissive metasurfaces with other semiconductor devices or additional metasurface elements, and more particularly to the integration of such metasurfaces with substrates, illumination sources and sensors are also provided. The metasurface elements provided may be used to shape output light from an illumination source or collect light reflected from a scene to form two unique patterns using the polarization of light. In such embodiments, shaped-emission and collection may be combined into a single co-designed probing and sensing optical system.

摘要: A multichannel optical coupler array can include a coupler housing structure and longitudinal waveguides. At least one of the longitudinal waveguides can be a vanishing core waveguide having an inner vanishing core having a first refractive index (N-1), an outer core having a second refractive index (N-2), and an outer cladding having a third refractive index (N-3). A refractive index transition between N-1 and N-2 can have a function form N(r), where r is a transverse distance from the inner vanishing core center. The function N(r) can be a smooth function having a positive average of the second derivative or function N(r) can be a step function with at least one step approximating the smooth function. The coupler housing structure may have non-circular holes formed by convex-shaped housing structure elements.

摘要: Lighting devices having optical waveguides for controlled light distribution are provided. A lighting device includes a housing, a light emitter disposed in the housing, and a waveguide at least partially disposed in an opening of the housing. The waveguide includes a light input surface defining coupling features, wherein the light emitter is disposed adjacent the light input surface and emits light into the coupling features. The waveguide further includes a light transmission portion disposed between the light input surface and a light extraction portion, wherein light from the light emitter received at the light input surface propagates through the light transmission portion toward the light extraction portion. The waveguide further includes the light extraction portion, which comprises at least one light redirection feature and at least one light extraction feature that cooperate to generate a controlled light pattern exiting the lighting device.

摘要: A process of making a diverging-light fiber optics illumination delivery system includes providing a micro-post comprising a glass-ceramic light-scattering element that includes at least one of a ceramic, a glass ceramic, an immiscible glass, a porous glass, opal glass, amorphous glass, an aerated glass, and a nanostructured glass; and fusion-splicing the glass-ceramic micro-post to the optical fiber by pulling an arc between electrodes across a gap formed by the optical fiber and the glass-ceramic micro-post; maintaining the arc for a time sufficiently long to make facing surfaces of the optical fiber and the micro-post one of malleable and molten; and pushing and thereby fusing together the facing surfaces of the optical fiber and the micro-post. Some embodiments can include fusing the glass-ceramic micro-post to the optical fiber by applying a laser beam to heat up at least one of the facing surfaces of the optical fiber and the glass-ceramic micro-post.

In some examples the periscope assembly includes first and second carriers comprising respective first and second waveguides and defining respective first and second cavities in which a third carrier comprising a third waveguide is disposed and optionally includes an optical component. In some examples, the cavities are defined in one or more carriers on a mating surface, on a side opposite to the mating surface, or on a side perpendicular to a mating surface.
