A system and method use a substrate with a pattern of individual, indiscrete alignment marks, i.e., the marks are separate and distinct from each other, and each mark is not divided into component parts. The pattern of marks is distributed over an area of the substrate, and the method also comprises the steps of providing a beam of radiation using an illumination system and an array of individually controllable elements to impart the beam with a pattern in its cross-section, providing a projection system to project the patterned beam onto the substrate, and providing a movement system to effect relative movement between the substrate and the projection system. A detection system, able to detect the alignment marks individually, is also provided, and the method includes using the detection system to detect the marks to determine a relative position of the substrate to the projection system, using the movement system to position the substrate relative to the projection system, and using the projection system to project the patterned beam of radiation onto a target portion of the substrate. The pattern comprises one or more rows of simple alignment marks, such as spots and short linear marks.

The reflecting element may have a coating that scatters the portion of radiation or changes the phase.

In a print order receiving machine, when a photographic print is inserted, an image of the photographic print is read and displayed on a monitor (steps 150, 152). When order conditions are inputted, an image which is processed on the basis of the order conditions is displayed on the monitor (steps 154 through 158). Further, when input of the order conditions is completed, the order conditions and order information based on the order conditions are set. The set order information is printed onto a photographic print as an invisible two-dimensional bar code. Copying processing of the photographic print is carried out on the basis of the order information which is read from the photographic print.

A novel magnification apparatus for power hand tools that allows working in confined workspaces is disclosed. In a first embodiment of the present invention, a magnification apparatus is attached to the top of the hand-held power tool using an adjustable friction mechanism that provides for an adjustment of the focus of the magnification apparatus. A tilt mechanism is also included that maintains the tool and workspace in the lens' field-of-view as the magnification apparatus is moved along the slot. This allows the operator to adjust the focus and magnification, thus allowing the clear viewing of the tools and workspace. In a second embodiment of the present invention, the magnification apparatus further includes a light for providing illumination in addition to magnification. The addition of the light in combination with the magnification apparatus increases the ability of the operator to view the tool and workspace, particularly in those cases where the workspace has poor ambient illumination.

There is provided a method in which a human image including a face of a person is extracted from a color original image at a high probability and an amount of exposure is determined so that the human image is reproduced at the most suitable density. Photographing information is read from a negative film, a color original image is divided, on the basis of the photometric data of the three colors of red, green and blue, into small regions in which color and density are the same for each of pixels on the original image, and characteristic values which indicates characteristics of the small regions are calculated. Subsequently, a small region which is estimated, on the basis of photographing information, to be a background whose size is largely different from the size of a main image, and a small region which is determined to have a low probability of being the main image on the basis of positional information are obtained, and these small regions are eliminated as non-main regions. A small region in a predetermined range of color or density corresponding to the human image is extracted, as an effective region, from other small regions than the eliminated non-main regions. The density of the human image is estimated by using the average luminance in the effective region, and the estimated density is outputted.
