    Abstract: A novel intermetallic compound superconducting material, characterized in that it comprises magnesium (Mg) and beryllium (Be); an alloy containing the intermetallic compound; and a method for preparing the intermetallic compound or the ally, which comprises admixing raw material powders containing Mg, Be or a metal for use in the alloy,respectively, and, for example, pressing, heating and forming the resultant mixed powder. Preferably, the intermetallic compound superconducting material is represented by the chemical empirical formula: Mg1Be2 and has a hexagonal AlB2 type crystal structure, and such an intermetallic compound exhibits a supercoductive transition temperature (Tc) of 35 K, which is higher than those of the conventional alloy superconducting materials. An alloy containing the above specific intermetallic compound and B is excellent in ductility and malleability, has a supercoductive transition temperature (Tc) of 35 K and exhibits a lowered resistivity for normal conduction over temperatures from the supercoductive transition temperature to room temperature. The intermetallic compound or the ally can be prepared by the above method which is excellent in reproducibility and is practiced at a low cost.
