摘要: A method of manufacturing a padded part (l) is proved. The padded part (1) is primarily for use in an item of wear that, in particular but not exclusively, may be a load-bearing harness or belt. The method comprises the steps of providing a first sheet of a flexible material (3) on one side of which is located at least one fastener (10, 11, 12). A second sheet of flexible material (4) is provided and a layered assembly is created comprising, in order, the first sheet of material (4) such that said one side of the first sheet (3) is outermost, a piece of mouldable padding (5), and the second sheet of flexible material (4). Hot melt adhesive layers (7) are provided between the padding (5) and the first and second sheets of flexible material (34). The layered assembly is moulded in a press after or during heating of the layered assembly thereby simultaneously bonding the layers of the assembly together and moulding the layered assembly into a predetermined shape. Preferably, at least one fastener (10, 11) is either secured to said one side of the first sheet (3) prior to creation of the layered assembly and/or another fastener (12) is secured to the first sheet of material (3) when the layered assembly is moulded in the press. The layered assembly is preferably created in a mould tool (17) that is provided with at least one cavity (30) in which the fastener or fasteners (10, 12) located on said one side of the first sheet (3) are inserted whereby the fastener or fasteners (10, 12) are unaffected by the pressure exerted by the press. Preferably also, the fastener or fasteners (10, 11) are attached to the first sheet of material using a jig that facilitates their alignment relative to the first sheet of material.

摘要: A rigid, contoured insulating sheet is formed from a flexible, substantially uniform thickness mat (43) of loose fibers or open-cell foam, impregnated with an uncured, heat-activable adhesive, e.g., a phenol-formaldehyde resin, by: a) compressing the mat between a pair of complementary, contoured, preheated e.g., 375 DEG F.) dies (19 and 22) that have perforations (4, 18 and 33) across substantially their entire contact surfaces (30 and 50); b) simultaneously ejecting superheated vapor, preferably steam (lines 9, 14 and 40), through the perforations in both dies, the vapor being at a pressure and temperature e.g., 80 psig and 600 DEG F.) sufficient to heat the adhesive in the mat to its activation temperature e.g., 230-350 DEG F.); and c) applying vacuum (line 10) to the mat, so as to pull ambient air therethrough, until the adhesive is substantially set. The process is especially useful for forming contoured, fiberglass, insulation panels for automobiles, e.g., headliner shells.

摘要: An insulating laminate (120), which is particularly suitable for a sound attenuating barrier, such as a contoured vehicle headliner. The disclosed embodiment includes a finish lamina (28), which may be preferably cloth-like, and a substrate which is preferably structurally stable and self-supporting and which may be adapted to absorb sound primarily at predetermined higher frequencies. In one preferred embodiment, a thin flexible film (50) is located between the finish lamina and the substrate which is adapted to absorb sound primarily at relative lower predetermined frequencies. The film may include a pattern of openings or holes (52) designed to absorb sound primarily at predetermined lower frequencies. In the disclosed embodiment, the substrate includes a porous fiber mat (34), preferably including fibers having a range of thicknesses to improve sound attenuation at higher frequencies, a structural foam lamina (36a) and a reinforcing scrim (38), preferably comprising spunbonded polyester filaments.
