Described herein is a transparent graphene and polymer based nanocomposite barrier film that provides gas, fluid, and/or vapor resistance. Also described is a barrier film where the graphene may be selected from reduced graphene oxide, graphene oxide, and is also functionalized or crosslinked. Also described is a barrier film where there is crosslinking between the graphene and/or the polymers to provide enhanced water resistance. A barrier device is also described that incorporates the barrier film and further comprises a substrate and a protective coating, encompassing the barrier film. Also described are methods for making the aforementioned barrier films and related devices.

A process for thermal transfer printing on plastic films incorporating a coating composition is provided. The process includes providing plastic film having a coating composition including a binder of a polymer and/or copolymer of carboxylic acid containing vinylic unsaturation, at least one finely divided particulate filler, and a surface active agent. A thermographic element such as a ribbon which includes a dye layer is then heated in the form of an image to be printed onto the plastic film, with the heating causing the dye layer to melt in the form of the image. The plastic film coated with the coating composition is contacted with the thermographic ribbon, and the dye layer is transferred from the ribbon to the plastic film. Such thermal transfer printing on coated plastic films provides for a multitude of uses such as plastic labels for outdoor use.

There is described a substantially planar self-supporting sheet (preferably an thermoplastic film e.g. formed from a polyolefin such as BOPP) comprising on at least one side thereof a substantially continuous adherent coating thereon to create a barrier to oxygen, the coating comprising nano-particles, the sheet characterised in that: (a) the nano-particles form a substantially continuous phase on the sheet; and/or (b) the nano-particles are present in an amount of at least about 20 % by dry weight of the coating; and/or (c) the coating is substantially free of polymeric binder, synthetic hydrophilic resin and/or a resin with a hydrophilic/hydrophobic character. The coated sheets have a high oxygen barrier, with preferred OTR values (at 23 DEG C and 0 % RH) / m / day. Preferred nano-particles are biopolymers such as starch and the coating is preferably substantially free of wax which has been found to reduce oxygen barrier effectiveness. Coatings components of small molecules or oligomers such as biomonomers (e.g. sucrose) have also been found to enhance oxygen barrier properties of a particulate coat whether the particles are micrometer or nanometre sized. Coating compositions, coated films, coating processes and packaged articles are also described.

A foam that is the extrudate of a mixture of a biodegradable polymer, starch, talc, and a blowing agent is provided. This foam is made by extruding a mixture of the above-listed components. This foam is water-resistant and in some variations waterproof making it an effective packing material. Still further, this foam is biodegradable, and thus, it can be disposed without creating environmental waste. In addition, the foam may be extruded into sheets and then thermoformed to form various articles.
