Abstract:
A system for forming twisted or aligned electrospun fibers has been developed. The collector for the electrospun fibers is capable of rotation. In some instances, fibers are formed between two collectors, at least one of which rotates to twist the fibers into a multifilament bundle with increased strength. In a second embodiment, a cylindrical collector rotates, and charged polymer jet uniformly coats the surface of the collector. When a drum collector rotates at a high speed, electrospun fibers align and form an array. Optionally, different active agents can be included in the electrospinning solutions to form fiber constructs with different strengths and controlled release profiles, providing a reproducible method to generate complexed structures based on electrospun fibers and controlled drug delivery profiles.
Abstract:
High-consistency nonabsorbable braided suture stock of specified size is prepared from twisted multifilament strands braided together with a tightness of weave of less than 60 picks/inch. The suture stock can be cut to provide sutures, which may be combined with needles to provide surgical sutures for wound closure.
Abstract:
Apparatuses and methods for making surgical braids, the apparatuses and methods having active and passive tracks. Additionally, various embodiments of surgical braids having changing patterns of traces, alternating colors, alternating cores, and tubular and flat sections, and combinations thereof.
Abstract:
A self-retaining braided suture comprises a braided suture with tissue retainers formed on the surface such that the suture can engage and retain tissue without knots. The suture includes a plurality of braided fibers which may be covered by a non-braided sheath of a material which enhances the formation, elevation and/or deployment of the retainers. The retainers can be formed so as not to disrupt the braided fibers. The self-retaining braided suture has properties which enhance the tensile strength of the suture while preserving flexibility and durability. Methods for manufacturing and using self-retaining braided suture are also described.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a surgical repair article, comprising a structural member of high performance polyethylene (HPPE) filament(s). The invention also relates to a method of making such a surgical repair article, and to a kit of parts comprising the article. The surgical repair article comprises a structural member of high performance polyethylene (HPPE) filament(s), and a biodegradable coating applied to the surface of the structural member, wherein the coating comprises a sol/gel produced inorganic oxide and a biologically active compound incorporated therein. The article combines high tensile strength, biocompatibility and favourable bioactive compound delivery characteristics.
Abstract:
A textile yarn includes a first segment and a second segment. The first segment includes a plurality of first strands and has a substantially constant first denier. The second segment includes a plurality of second strands integrated together and has a substantially constant second denier. There are more second strands in the second segment than first strands in the first segment such that the second denier is greater than the first denier. A first portion of the plurality of second strands is made from a first plurality of yarn elements that extend through the first and second segments. A second portion of the plurality of second strands is made from a second plurality of yarn elements present in the second segment and not the first segment. The yarn elements in the second plurality of yarn elements terminate in a transition zone between the first segment and the second segment.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a suture manufactured using poly octyl cyanoacrylate, and a method for manufacturing same, and aims to provide a suture and a method for manufacturing the suture, the suture which maintains tensile strength at the time of a surgical procedure and is absorbed into the body without causing any problems after the surgical procedure, by using poly octyl cyanoacrylate generated as a byproduct during the preparation of octyl cyanoacrylate. The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a suture, and a suture prepared using the method, the method comprising: a step for preparing octyl cyanoacetate by reacting cyanoacetic acid and octane alcohol by 1:1 equivalence ratio under the existence of a solvent; a step for reacting the octyl cyanoacetate and paraformaldehyde by 1:1 equivalence ratio under the existence of a solvent; a step for isolating and refining octyl cyanoacrylate after removing the solvent when the reaction is completed; a step for collecting poly octyl cyanoacrylate from the byproduct left from refining octyl cyanoacrylate; and a step for manufacturing a suture by a braid process after manufacturing a thread by melt spinning and extrusion molding the collected poly octyl cyanoacrylate.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a surgical suture and to a method for manufacturing a biodegradable surgical suture with a looped end, which easily provides a knotting effect, even without actual knotting, at the body part injected by a needle, after the needle has passed the incision of the body, to be closed. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a surgical suture with a looped end, using a twister/braider.
