One aspect provides a method of attaching a feedthrough to a titanium housing of an implantable medical device. The method includes providing the housing with a flange forming a recess about an opening through the housing, the opening disposed within the recess. A feedthrough is positioned within the recess so as to form a gap between the flange and an insulator of the feedthrough. A braze preform is then positioned within the recess about the insulator, the braze preform comprising a biocompatible braze material having a melting point less than a β-transus temperature of the titanium of the housing. The preform is melted at a temperature less than the β-transus temperature of the titanium of the housing such that the melted braze material fills at least the gap, and then cooled to form a braze joint which bonds the insulator to the housing and hermetically seals the opening.

A method of forming a bonded product using metal nanoparticles is provided. More specifically, provided is a paste containing a flux component that can form a metal phase even in an inert atmosphere. The use of this paste allows a bonding material that can give a practically acceptable bonding strength to be provided in an inert atmosphere such as a nitrogen atmosphere at low temperatures without performing conventionally used pressurization. The paste is a bonding material configured to include: silver nanoparticles having an average primary particle diameter of 1 to 200 nm and coated with an organic material having 8 or less carbon atoms; a flux component having at least two carboxyl groups; and a dispersion medium. The use of this bonding material allows materials to be bonded even at a temperature of 300°C or lower.

Polymer compositions containing a polymer matrix, a graphene that is covalently bonded to the polymer matrix and metal particles are described herein. A combined concentration of the metal particles and the graphene in the polymer matrix exceeds an electrical percolation threshold. In general, the graphene has a carbon:oxygen ratio of at least about 20:1 so as to impart a high electrical conductivity thereto. The polymer compositions can be used as a lead-free solder material, in which case they can allow multiple rework operations to take place at a connection. Methods for making and using such electrically conductive polymer compositions are also described.
