The first supported catalyst may be a platinum catalyst, a platinum-palladium catalyst, or a platinum catalyst promoted with bismuth, and the second supported catalyst preferably has a palladium to gold weight ratio of about 0.85:1.0. To improve aged catalyst performance, the first and second supported catalysts are coated onto different layers, zones, or monoliths of the substrate for the engine exhaust catalyst.

Soot filters for removing soot from the exhaust gas of lean-burn engines become blocked with progressive operating duration on account of the deposition of soot, and must therefore be regenerated at regular intervals. It has been found that reliable operation of the soot filter is possible only if an active regeneration is carried out from time to time by increasing the exhaust-gas temperature to the soot ignition temperature. For this purpose, an oxidation catalytic converter is usually arranged upstream of the soot filter, and the exhaust-gas temperature is increased by means of the catalytic combustion of additionally injected fuel. Here, the oxidation catalytic converter is subjected to high temperature loading and therefore ages very quickly. It has surprisingly been found that the ageing of the oxidation catalytic converter can be slowed if said oxidation catalytic converter is split into at least two separate catalytic converters and the distance between said separate catalytic converters is 2 to 30 mm.

Lean mix engines require an exhaust gas system having nitrogen oxide storage catalysts for the removal of nitrogen oxides from the exhaust gases. If the lean mix engine is operated using exhaust gas comprising sulfur, the storage catalysts must be desulfurized from time to time. The desulfurization process has an inherent risk of high emissions of harmful substances. These emissions can be prevented if the cylinders of the lean mix engine are combined in two groups, which emit their exhaust gas in two associated exhaust gas lines, in which at least one nitrogen oxide storage catalyst is disposed. The two exhaust gas lines are combined to a common exhaust gas line behind the storage catalysts, the line comprising a catalyst, which has a three-way function under stoichiometric conditions. The two nitrogen oxide storage catalysts are desulfurized time-shifted from each other. While rich exhaust gas having a high temperature flows through the one storage catalyst for the desulfurization process, lean exhaust gas flows through the second storage catalyst such that the combined exhaust gas has a stoichiometric composition during the entire desulfurization duration. Under the stoichiometric conditions, the catalyst having a three-way function is capable of converting hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides into harmless components.

There is provided an exhaust gas purification apparatus for an engine capable of effectively removing NOx in exhaust gas even when the temperature of exhaust gas is relatively low. The exhaust gas purification apparatus includes a selective reduction catalyst 21 provided in an exhaust pipe 16, a liquid injection nozzle 23 provided on the upstream side of the selective reduction catalyst 21, a liquid injecting means 30 capable of injecting a urea-based liquid 32 via the liquid injection nozzle, a controller 44, and a mixer 26. The apparatus further includes an ammonia purification catalyst 54 provided on the downstream side of the selective reduction catalyst 21, a diesel particulate filter 51 provided on the upstream side of the nozzle 23, an oxidation catalyst 53 provided on the upstream side of the diesel particulate filter 51, and a temperature sensor 43 for detecting the temperature of the selective reduction catalyst 21. A fuel injection device is configured so as to be capable of injecting fuel into a cylinder after the top dead center of piston, and when the temperature sensor detects that the selective reduction catalyst 21 has a temperature not higher than a predetermined temperature, the controller controls the fuel injection device so that fuel is injected into the cylinder after the top dead center of piston.
