A refractory formulation containing an anhydrous solvent, an oleophilic rheology modifier and a refractory aggregate exhibits non-thermoplastic behavior, and remains plastic and formable at temperatures in the range of 10 degrees Celsius to 180 degrees Celsius. The oleophilic rheology modifier may effectively bind with the solvent to create a gel-like structure with organic solvents with moderate to high polarity. A phyllosilicate clay that has been treated with a quaternary fatty acid amine may be used as the oleophilic rheology modifier.

The invention relates to a method for producing a moulded insulating part (1), characterised by the following method steps: - producing an inorganic pulp (2) consisting of water (3), glass fibres (4) and phyllosilicate (5), - introducing the pulp (2) into a cavity (6) of a casting mould (7), at least one side of said cavity having the negative form of the moulded insulating part (1) to be produced and the wall of said cavity being at least partially water-permeable, - evacuating the aqueous fraction present in the pulp (2), - opening the casting mould (7) and subsequently removing the moulded insulating part (1) that has been produced. The invention also relates to a moulded insulating part produced by said method and characterised in that a pulp (2) created using water (3) for producing the moulded insulating part (1) consisting of a glass-fibre-phyllosilicate mixture has a fraction of exclusively synthetic phyllosilicate (5) of between 0.5% and 2.5 % and a fraction of glass fibres (4) of between 0.3 and 1.5%. The invention further relates to a casting mould for producing a moulded insulating part using said method, characterised in that the casting mould (7) consists of a lower mould (8) and an upper mould (9) that closes said lower mould, and that at least one side of the cavity (6) present in the casting mould (7) corresponds to the negative form of the moulded insulating part (1) to be produced, at least one inner surface of the casting mould (7) having a plurality of individual bores (14.1, 14.2).

The invention relates to a method comprising the followings steps: triturating and mixing raw materials, including calcareous clays, non-calcareous clays, feldspar, quartz, kaolin, calcite and dolomite; adding hydrated and unhydrated calcines which can be any or a combination of calcined dolomite, hydrated calcined dolomite, sintered dolomite, quicklime, calcium hydroxide, sintered lime, or a mixture thereof, and which may also include calcite or dolomite; granulating with a quantity of water of between 1 and 20%; and obtaining the optimum moisture content by means of drying, for the subsequent pressing of the solid granule under optimum conditions. The method according to the invention reduces the consumption of water during the process of mixing the raw materials by grinding, and reduces the consumption of energy used in the drying of the granules and the firing cycles, as well as reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere

Hydrophobic aggregates for use in refractory castables and gunning mixtures and methods of their preparation. The aggregates here are formed by crushing insulating fire brick and coating the resulting particles with a hydrophobic component. The hydrophobic component may be a polydimethylsiloxane having a terminal silanol group. As a result of the coating process, the coated aggregate has very low levels of alkalis. The aggregates may be used to form refractory castables that do not undergo substantial alkaline hydrolysis due to the reduced levels of alkalis. The castables made from these aggregates display superior physical properties, including lower water content, lower permanent linear change, high strength, and superior thermal conductivity/insulation properties, while at the same time possessing lower density and requiring less water to be used during castable formation. These improved properties also are observed in gunning mixtures formed from these aggregates.
