The invention provides a therapeutical composition comprising purified fractions of compounds being or containing a pathogen-inhibiting oligosaccharide sequence for use as a medicament. The present invention especially describes an oligosaccharide-containing substance or receptor binding to diarrheagenic Escherichia coli and/or zoonotic Helicobacter species, and use thereof in, e.g., pharmaceutical, nutritional and other compositions for prophylaxis and treatment of conditions due to the presence of Escherichia coli and/or zoonotic Helicobacter species. The invention is also directed to the use of the receptors for diagnostics of Escherichia coli and/or zoonotic Helicobacter species.

The present invention relates to a method of profiling a cell population comprising a step of detecting the presence or absence of at least two biological markers in said cell population, wherein at least one of said markers is a cell surface marker, which is a sialylated N-glycan marker with structure NeuNAca3Gal, and at least one of said markers is a mRNA marker related to glycoproteins and/or glycosynthase proteins. The invention also relates to method for purification of cord blood cell population and to a complete cell population from cord blood purified by said method.

The invention describes novel compositions of glycans, glycomes, from human embryonic stem cells, and especially novel subcompositions of the glycomes with specific monosaccharide compositions and glycan structures. The invention is further directed to methods for modifying the glycomes and analysis of the glycomes and the modified glycomes. Furthermore, the invention is directed to stem cells carrying the modified glycomes on their surfaces. The glycomes are preferably analysed by profiling methods able to detect reproducibly and quantitatively numerous individual glycan structures at the same time. The most preferred type of the profile is a mass spectrometric profile. The invention specifically revealed novel target structures and is especially directed to the development of reagents recognizing the structures.
