Specifically, the present invention provides a prosthetic femoral stem (20) having a strengthening rib (40) protruding from the substrate (26) thereof and being flush with a porous coating (28) formed thereon. The strengthening rib (40) is advantageously positioned so as to increase the cross-sectional moment of inertia of the prosthetic femoral stem (20) and thereby decrease the stress on the anterio-lateral surface of the femoral stem (20). A protrusion (40) in accordance with the present invention may also be utilized with a prosthetic femoral stem (20) absent a porous coating. In such an embodiment, the height of the protrusion (40) is such that the protrusion (40) will be surrounded by the cement mantle formed when the prosthetic femoral component (20) is cemented in a femoral canal.

Osteogenesis and osseointegration promotion and maintenance devices for osseous implants include an implant member having a first electrode, an inlaid second electrode positioned on the member so that it is electrically isolated from and substantially flush with the member surface, and an electrical stimulation mechanism preferably located at the member and operative to provide electrical stimulation signals to endosseous tissue surrounding the implant through the first and second electrodes. The first electrode may be the member itself or a second inlaid electrode. The implant is thus electrically functionalized for osteogenesis and osseointgration acceleration. The device is applicable to both non-dental and dental implants. In all embodiments, the use of inlaid electrode(s) enables the general appearance, external surface and mechanical integrity of the implant to be left essentially unchanged.

The disc member includes an exterior wall which has a slit defined therein. The slit defines a longitudinal component of direction and a lateral component of direction. Preferably, the exterior wall includes a plurality of helical slits, adjacent slits being disposed in at least partial overlapping relation to define an overlapping region. Upon insertion of the disc member within the intervertebral space with the support surfaces in contacting engagement with respective vertebral portions of the adjacent vertebrae, forces exerted by the vertebral portions on the support surfaces are transferred along the exterior wall through the overlapping region.
