Formulations and methods of making solar cell contacts and cells therewith are disclosed. In general, the invention provides a solar cell comprising a contact made from a mixture wherein, prior to firing, the mixture comprises at least one aluminum source, at least one source of a metal including one or more of boron, titanium, nickel, tin, gallium zinc, indium, and copper, and about 0.1 to about 10 wt% of a glass component. Within the mixture, the overall content of aluminum is about 50 wt% to about 85 wt% of the mixture, and the overall combined content of boron, nickel, tin, silver, gallium, zinc, indium, copper, is about 0.05 to about 40 wt% of the mixture.

The individual layers each impart functional characteristics to the conductive trace and each layer has components that can be adjusted to affect the performance characteristics of that particular layer without detrimentally affecting the performance characteristics of the remaining layers.

Glasses comprising Βi203, ZnO B203 and optionally a colorant including an oxide of a metal such as iron, cobalt, manganese, nickel, copper and chromium are suitable to form hermetic seals in solar cell modules, architectural glass windows and MEMS devices. Glass frit and paste compositions suitable for flow and bonding to various substrates- glass, metal, silicon, in the temperature range of 400-500 degrees Centigrade. The broad compositional range in mole% is 25-70% Bi203, up to 65% ZnO, and 1-70% B203. Such glasses do not have batched in alumina or silica. Such glasses lack alumina and silica.
