The termination assemblies, in one embodiment include hollow end caps that are formed from a dielectric and which have one or more conductive contacts or plated surfaces disposed on or within the cavity so that they will frictionally mate with the conductive traces on the transmission line. In another embodiment, a connector housing is provided with a center slot and a plurality of dual loop contacts to provide redundant circuit paths and low inductance to the termination assembly. A coupling element may be utilized in the slot to achieve a desired level of coupling between the termination contacts.

The connector has a plurality of terminals (140, 141, 150, 253, 254) for terminating to respective signal wires, ground wires and power wires of the cable, and also has an additional terminal (252) that serves to detect and identify status information about the cable to circuits on a circuit board to which the cable is connected through the plug connector and a mating receptacle connector (110). This detection terminal is shorted to another terminal of the connector, preferably a power ground, or return, terminal (254). The shorting is done with an electronic component that modifies the voltage passing from the shorted terminal through the detection terminal. The modified voltage may be easily read on the circuit board to determine the status of the cable (such as the speed of the cable), or an electronic device attached thereto.

The circuit trace exit structure involves the exit portions of the circuit traces (420, 550) of the differential signal vias (401, 402, 591) to follow a path where the traces then meet with and join to the transmission line portions (552) of the conductive traces.
