Amidines and derivatives thereof of formula (I) are described. The process for their preparation and pharmaceutical compositions thereof are also described. The amidines of the invention are useful in the inhibition of chemotaxis of neutrophils induced by IL- 8. The compounds of the invention are used in the treatement of psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, melanoma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bullous pemphigo, rheumatoid arthritis, idiopathic fibrosis, glomerulonephritis and in the prevention and treatment of damages caused by ischemia and reperfusion.

The invention is directed to a process for reducing or reductively cleaving an organic compound susceptible to dissolving metal reduction comprising exposing the organic compound to a solution of lithium in a polyamine including at leat two amino groups, selected from the group consisting of primary and secondary amino groups and mixtures thereof, e.g. ethylenediamine and R-NH2, optionally containing a lower alkyl alcohol, wherein R is chosen from the group consisting of ethyl, propyl, and butyl, including all straight and branched chain isomers thereof, for a time sufficient to effect reduction.

The reaction between a fatty acid RCOOH and a diamine H 2 NCH 2 CH 2 NHR, wherein R represents an aliphatic group comprising from 8 to 22 carbon atoms and R, represents a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl group comprising from 1 to 4 carbon atoms so as to produce an imidazoline is carried out using a moderate initial excess of diamine and when necessary reducing the pressure logarithmically with respect to time until the reaction is completed. The formation of undesirable diamide impurities is avoided while using economic quantities of diamine and non-specialised equipment. The processes can be carried out without any monitoring of the progress of the reaction by skilled personnel being required and if through error progress is unsatisfactory a single readjustment can serve to carry the reaction to completion.
