Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a left-ventricular assist device that includes a self-expandable impeller and a pump-outlet tube. The impeller is configured to be deployed in a left ventricle of a subject and to pump blood from the subject's left ventricle to an aorta of the subject via the pump-outlet tube, for a period of more than two days. The impeller is configured to provide blood flow of more than 4.5 L/min, when pumping against a pressure gradient of 50 mmHg. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a delivery catheter and a delivery tube configured to extend from outside a subject's body into the subject's left ventricle via the delivery catheter. A locking unit is configured to couple to a proximal end of the delivery catheter and the delivery tube is configured to pass through the locking unit. The locking unit includes at least one internal seal configured to surround the delivery tube and to inhibit backflow of blood of the subject, from the delivery catheter, through the locking unit. The locking unit also includes a clip, which has only two states, which consist of a closed state, in which the clip grips the delivery tube so as to inhibit movement of the delivery tube relative to the delivery catheter, and an open state, in which the clip does not grip the delivery tube. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for use with a venous system of a subject that includes one or more tributary vessels that flow into a vein at junctions. A blood-pump-catheter includes a material configured to be placed at a downstream location that is downstream of the junctions and to at least partially occlude blood flow through the vein. The material defines a blood-outlet opening. A blood pump pumps blood from a region of the vein that is adjacent to the junctions, and through the blood-outlet opening. A blood-flow pathway directs upstream venous blood flow from an upstream location that is upstream of the junctions, to downstream of the material, without the upstream venous blood flow being pumped by the pump. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a ventricular assist device that includes an axial shaft and an impeller disposed on the axial shaft, the impeller being configured to pump blood. A frame is disposed around the impeller. The distal end of the axial shaft is configured to engage with a distal thrust bearing such as to prevent the axial shaft from undergoing axial motion in response to variations in the pressure gradient against which the impeller pumps blood. An impeller-stabilizing spring is disposed around the axial shaft between a distal end of the impeller and the thrust bearing, the impeller-stabilizing spring being configured to stabilize the distal end of the impeller. Other applications are also described.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided, including a left-ventricular assist device that includes an impeller configured for insertion into a subject's left ventricle. A delivery tube passes through the subject's aorta, from outside the subject into the left ventricle. The delivery tube includes an outer layer that varies along a length of the delivery tube such that a flexural rigidity of the delivery tube at a first portion of the delivery tube, which is configured to traverse the aortic valve, is less than the flexural rigidity at a second portion, which is configured to traverse at least a portion of the aortic arch, and the flexural rigidity at the second portion is less than the flexural rigidity at a third portion, which is configured to traverse the descending aorta. Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a blood pump that includes an impeller configured to be delivered through vasculature of a subject while the impeller is in a radially-constrained configuration. The impeller is configured to self-expand to a non-radially-constrained configuration, and to pump blood while in the non-radially-constrained configuration. A ratio between (a) a diameter of the impeller when the impeller is in its non-radially-constrained configuration at a location at which the diameter of the impeller is at its maximum and (b) a diameter of the impeller when the impeller is in its radially-constrained configuration is greater than 7:2. Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described for improving renal function of a patient, including mechanically occluding the patient's inferior vena cava downstream of the renal vein ostium to form an upstream region and a downstream region of the inferior vena cava, and mechanically pumping blood through the inferior vena cava from the upstream region to a discharge location in the downstream region while the inferior vena cava is occluded, wherein the blood remains in the inferior vena cava while being mechanically pumped. Abstract: Apparatus and methods are described including a ventricular assist device that includes an impeller configured to be placed inside a subject's left ventricle. A frame is disposed around the impeller, the frame defining generally-cylindrical central portion, and a proximal conical portion that widens from a proximal end of the frame to a proximal end of the generally-cylindrical central portion. A motor drives the impeller to pump blood from the left ventricle to the subject's aorta, by rotation of the impeller. The impeller is configured to be disposed at least partially within the proximal conical portion of the frame during at least some of a time during which the impeller rotates. Other applications are also described.
