More accurate correlation of the particle mass is achieved in that a corrected loading characteristic quantity is formed from the loading characteristic quantity by modifying the loading characteristic quantity using a compression factor which takes into account different degrees of compression of the particles as a function of different operating states of the engine.

If there is an external start signal present, the second operating phase is preferably only started if, at the same time, at least one additional conditions is satisfied. During the time period set by the timer, the system continuously decides, based on evaluation of at least one parameter, whether the change in operating mode can be made. If this is the case, the operative mode change is made immediately. If this is not the case, the operative mode change is made no later than when the time period set by the timer has expired. The method ensures that a driver of a motor vehicle in which the internal combustion engine is provided for propulsion will not notice a torque jump of the internal combustion engine, possibly occurring during an operative mode change.

Moreover, the instantaneous odometer reading of the odometer on restarting the engine is determined, and the odometer reading found on restarting the engine is compared with the stored odometer reading. Suitable measures are initiated for the case when the odometer reading found on restarting the engine and the stored odometer reading do not match.
