A method for operating an exhaust gas treatment device of an internal combustion engine in which a change in the operating mode of the internal combustion engine is made as a function of a parameter. A timer is started in response to an operative mode change request. During the time period set by the timer, the system continuously decides, based on evaluation of at least one parameter, whether the change in operating mode can be made. If this is the case, the operative mode change is made immediately. If this is not the case, the operative mode change is made no later than when the time period set by the timer has expired. The method ensures that a driver of a motor vehicle in which the internal combustion engine is provided for propulsion will not notice a torque jump of the internal combustion engine, possibly occurring during an operative mode change.

The method features a second control loop in which at least one second control variable is calculated from a second deviation that is calculated from a second actual value and a second setpoint value; a temperature upstream of the catalyst being determined as the second actual value. More accurate correlation of the particle mass is achieved in that a corrected loading characteristic quantity is formed from the loading characteristic quantity by modifying the loading characteristic quantity using a compression factor which takes into account different degrees of compression of the particles as a function of different operating states of the engine.

The procedure is characterized thereby, in that if the engine rotational speed (n) increases without in the process exceeding an engine rotational speed threshold value (n_S) and the engine's load (mk) is greater than a load threshold value (mk_S), the diesel engine (10) is operated in such a manner that the diesel engine (10) alternately generates an oxidizing and a reductive exhaust gas atmosphere before the catalytic converter (24; 26). The present invention relates to a device and a method for dividing up a total fuel amount, which is to be injected into the combustion chamber of a cylinder during a combustion cycle, into a plurality of injections. To this end, a first fuel amount, which is to be injected during a first injection is determined, a fourth, minimum fuel amount for a third injection is determined, and the total fuel amount minus the first fuel amount is compared to the fourth, minimum fuel amount. When the total fuel amount minus the first fuel amount is greater than or equal to the fourth, minimum fuel amount, the first fuel amount and a second fuel amount, which is to be injected into the combustion chamber of the cylinder during a second injection, are set to zero, and a third fuel amount, which is to be injected during a third injection, is set to the total fuel amount.
