Abstract: 863,309. Curing rubbers. B.B. CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. June 3, 1957 [June 11, 1956], No. 39646/60. Divided out of 863,308. Classes 2(6) and 70. A solid sulphur-vulcanizable rubber is cured by mixing it with a substantially infusible reaction product of PbO and a thermosetting, oil-soluble alkali-catalysed condensate of an aldehyde (more than 1 mol.) and a phenol (1 mol.) having a substituent containing at least 3 C atoms, and applying heat. The PbO-resin reaction products, prepared as described in Specification 863,308, may be milled with the rubbers in known manner to give compositions which may be moulded or extruded and which, when cured, are protected from attack by ultra-violet light and are more heat stable. In Example (3) comparative results are given of milling, moulding and curing mixtures of C black-filled rubbers with various additives, the rubbers being butadiene-styrene and -acrylonitrile copolymers, polychloroprene and natural rubber, and the additives being pphenylphenol-aldehyde resin with or without PbO and with or without stearic acid; PbO-pphenylphenol-formaldehyde reaction product with or without stearic acid; and MgO-pphenylphenol-formaldehyde reaction product.

Abstract: 704,241. Adhesive coated sheets; seaming non-metallic sheets; reinforcing edges. B. B. CHEMICAL CO., Ltd. (B. B. Chemical Co.). Sept. 17, 1951 [Sept. 16, 1950], No. 22811/50. Drawings to Specification. Classes 42 (1) and 140 A flexible sheet material for use in reinforcing or bonding vinyl resin sheet material comprises a fabric base, e.g. woven cotton, paper or felt, having on one or both sides a layer less than 0.015 in. thick of an adhesive comprising a butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer and (a) chlorinated rubber, or (b) vinyl chloridevinyl acetate copolymers containing 85-93 per cent. vinyl chloride or (c) mixtures of (a) and (b). A suitable composition contains 100 parts butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer containing 25-45 per cent. acrylonitrile and 25-60 parts of resinous material (a) (b) or (c) dissolved in 70/30 toluene/methylisobutylketone or 75/25 mineral oil/cyclohexanone solvent, and may also contain silica gel and "Dixie" (R.T.M.) clay. A layer of coating solution is applied by knife spreader, and the fabric is passed through an oven having circulating air at 160-170‹ F. to evaporate the solvent, then further coatings are applied with solvent evaporation between each application. The coated sheet may be used to bond two vinyl resin sheets edge-to-edge by pressing the coated sheet onto the joint after activating the adhesive layer by brushing with a volatile organic solvent, e.g. cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone, methylisobutyl ketone, acetone or mixtures thereof. Alternatively, a sheet coated on both sides with adhesive is used to effect a joint between two vinyl resin sheets placed face to face. The coated sheet may also be used to reinforce the edges of vinyl resin sheets at a notch, or sewn seam, or where nails or tacks are to be inserted. The vinyl resin sheets may be sheets of plasticized polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride.
