Abstract:
A method of forming a coating on a food or beverage container, which includes spraying a coating composition onto an interior surface of the food or beverage container, where the coating composition includes an emulsion-polymerized latex copolymer having copolymer chains of one or more ethylenically-unsaturated monomers and one or more styrene offset monomers. Preferably, the coating composition is substantially free of BPA, PVC, and styrene. The method may also include curing the sprayed coating composition, thereby providing the coating on the interior surface of the food or beverage container.
Abstract:
An article, comprising a food or beverage container (20), or a portion thereof, that includes a metal substrate (30, 32) and a coating (34) disposed on at least a portion of the metal substrate (30, 32). The coating (34) is preferably formed from a coating composition that comprises an emulsion polymerized latex having a first-stage emulsion polymerized copolymer and a second-stage emulsion polymerized copolymer.
Abstract:
A method of forming a coating on a food or beverage container, which includes spraying a coating composition onto an interior surface of the food or beverage container, where the coating composition includes an emulsion-polymerized latex copolymer having copolymer chains of one or more mono-unsaturated monomers that are cross-linked with one or more multi-unsaturated monomers. The method also includes heating the sprayed coating composition to cure the coating composition, thereby providing the coating on the interior surface of the food or beverage container.
Abstract:
A polyester polymer is provided that includes at least one pendant phenolic-containing group. In one embodiment, the polyester polymer is combined with an optional crosslinker and an optional carrier to form a coating composition suitable for use in coating articles such as packaging articles. The coating composition typically includes a resole phenolic crosslinker. In one embodiment, the polyester polymer has at least one phenolic-containing group that comprises an adduct of cardanol.

Abstract:
Metal food or beverage containers are coated with a polyether polymer containing at least two ether linkages in the polymer backbone. The polymer is substantially free of segments derived from bisphenol A and epoxides thereof, and is a reaction product of, or can be derived from, (i) an aryl- or heteroaryl-group-containing diepoxide that is not derived from a polyhydric phenol or a glycidyl ester and (ii) a polymer backbone extender that has two functional groups reactive with an epoxy group and which following reaction with the diepoxide provides at least one pendant aryl or heteroaryl group on the polymer backbone, or provides at least one divalent aryl or heteroaryl group in the polymer backbone and linked to the backbone via ether linkages.
Abstract:
A polymer is provided that preferably includes at least one unsaturated cycloaliphatic group. In one embodiment, the polymer is combined with an optional crosslinker and an optional carrier to form a coating composition suitable for use in coating articles such as packaging articles. In one embodiment, the polymer has at least one unsaturated cycloaliphatic group that is at least bicyclic.
Abstract:
A polymer and coating composition containing the polymer are provided that are useful in coating applications such as, for example, food or beverage packaging containers. The polymer preferably includes a backbone having one or more polycyclic groups. In one embodiment, the polymer is a polyester and, more preferably, a polyester-urethane polymer. In one embodiment, the one or more polycyclic groups is a tricyclic or higher group.
Abstract:
A polyester-carbamate polymer and coating compositions containing the polymer are provided. The polyester-carbamate polymer preferably includes a polyester-carbamate backbone and one or more blocked isocyanate groups. A coating composition is provided that preferably includes the polyester-carbamate polymer and a thermoplastic dispersion. In a preferred embodiment, the coating composition is an organosol.
Abstract:
The present invention is based upon a coating system that uses polycyclic polyester polymers and phenolic resins. The coating system comprises first and second coatings. The first coating preferably is derived from ingredients comprising a polycyclic polyester resin having first and second fused rings that share at least two atoms in common. The second coating preferably is derived from ingredients comprising a polycyclic polyester resin that may be different than the polyester of the first coating.
