    摘要: The problem of securing the position of an internally placed medical device that extends out of the body during targeted high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is solved by a uniquely configured immobilization system that can be utilized to stabilize medical devices placed, for example, within the uterus or cervix. During the process of transporting a patient from the location where the HDR applicator is emplaced, for example, where the tandem and ring is placed within the cervix of a patient, to the location where the treatment is actually applied to the tissue, the medical device can move out of place and in so doing cause discomfort, pain, or an ineffective treatment for the patient. The embodiments of this immobilization system can include a strap apparatus, a straddling girdle, and bracket that can be attached to a patient. This immobilization system ensures the position of an internally placed medical device during targeted HDR brachytherapy.

The medical apparatus may include a plurality of treatment channels configured to be positioned adjacent a body tissue and a plurality of delivery channels coupled to a corresponding number of treatment channels. The medical apparatus may also include a plurality of source channels configured to receive one or more energy sources, a tracking channel configured to receive a tracking element, and a connecting element configured to connect each delivery channel with either one of the plurality of sources channels or the tracking channel.

    摘要: A cradle for holding an ultrasound probe includes a base for securing to a stepper-stabilizer, roller-bearings supported on the base, and a probe-holder that rotates on the roller-bearings about a horizontal axis relative to the base. The probe-holder includes a front yoke and a rear yoke, with a yoke retainer supporting the front yoke. A pivot side rail and a lock side rail span rigidly between the front yoke and the rear yoke. A locking knob is captured to the lock side rail to prevent the locking knob from detaching. A latch hinged to the pivot side rail is engaged by the locking knob for securement over the probe. A detent ensures 90-degree alignment of the yoke retainer to the base. The rollers rotatably support the yoke retainer and the rear yoke, and further rotation of the front yoke enables a further adjustment to calibrate the cradle.

    摘要: Compensator-based brachytherapy (CBT) for treatment of cancerous tumors or other pathologic tissues. CBT permits, in one aspect, increased dosage conformity for non-radially symmetric tumors by utilizing a device that can shield radiation emanated from an electronic brachytherapy (BT) source or non-electronic BT source. The device can comprise, in one aspect, a radiation compensator having a treated surface that comprises a position-dependent thickness based at least on a radiation therapy plan specific to a patient and geometry of a patient region to be treated. In an additional or alternative aspect, the device can comprise a source of radiation movably inserted into an enclosure coupled to the radiation compensator. As part of CBT, in one implementation, the radiation source can reside at a plurality of locations within the radiator compensator during a respective plurality of dwell times based on the radiation therapy plan.

The probe-holder includes a front yoke and a rear yoke, and a yoke retainer supporting the front yoke. A pivot side rail and a lock side rail span rigidly between the front yoke and the rear yoke. A locking knob that is captured to the lock side rail to prevent the locking knob from detaching. A latch hinged to the pivot side rail is engaged by the locking knob for securement over the probe. A detent insures precise 90-degree alignment of the yoke retainer with respect to the base. The rollers rotatably support the yoke retainer and the rear yoke, and free rotation of the front yoke is controlled by the yoke retainer to allow for correction of misalignment.
