Abstract: A power supply system including a distribution transformer connected to a supply grid and supplying a plurality of remote electric loads over a supply network, measuring means for measuring total power transferred between the grid and loads through the transformer, and control signal generation means to signal some of the loads to switch off in response to determining that the measured power transfer exceeds a maximum set point in order to limit the peak power transferred through the transformer.

Abstract: A demand side electric power supply management system is disclosed. The system comprises an islanded power system having a point of coupling to a supply grid. The islanded power system supplies a plurality of electric loads, each of which is associated with a load controller to control the maximum power demanded by that load. A measuring means associated with the point of coupling measures the total power transfer between the grid and the islanded system, and a system controller monitors the measured power transfer relative to a set point and provides a control signal to a plurality of load controllers. Each load controller receives substantially the same control signal and determines the maximum power which each load associated with the load controller is allowed to draw from the islanded power system based on information contained in the control signal.

Abstract: The technology is generally directed towards real-time power grid island detection and monitoring, including obtaining and outputting information about the cause and location of the islanding event, island size, island composition, phasor measurement units in each island, and the overall island frequency. The technology provides for suggested island resynchronization actions such as one or more circuit breakers that can be closed by the power grid system operators to resynchronize an island with the main island/system. An application program may output the information and also assist the operators during the resynchronization process by providing real time information about the voltage difference and frequency difference across each proposed circuit breaker in the suggested restoration point. Real-time tracking of the island resynchronization actions is also described.

Abstract: A power system having a plurality of power converters coupled together at a point of common coupling (PCC). The power converters are coupled to a load and provide a combined power converter output to the load. A switch is coupled in series between the PCC and an external grid. When the switch is closed, the power system is in a grid-tied configuration and when the switch is open, the power system is in a microgrid configuration. A control system coupled to the power converters enables the switch to open and close in response to a signal received from one or more sensors monitoring the external grid, enables the power converters to operate in a current control mode when the switch is closed, and transitions the power converters from grid-tied mode to microgrid mode and synchronize the power converters such that the converters share the load.

Abstract: The invention provides a method for coping with an unintentional islanding of an electrical distribution grid within a Commelec-type framework for the real-time control of micro-grids, of Resource Agents (RA) controlled by Grid Agents (GA), comprising at least maintain at any time before the unintentional islanding occurs a rating of all resource agents controlled by a same grid agent in view of their ability to be a slack resource, by computing the rating based on a power availability and on a state-of-energy of each resource, the state-of-energy quantifying an amount of energy that may be withdrawn from a potential slack irrespectively of a PQ profile, whereby the PQ profile describes bounds for active and reactive power that a resource can inject or absorb; and a shedding list of all the resources that have to be shed if a current best candidate slack resource is selected, the current best candidate slack resource being the slack resource having the best rating of all resources as determined in the step of rating all resource agents, the shedding list being obtained by computing from an uncertainty of the resources and a predetermined order of shedding priority. The method further comprises continuously monitor islanding conditions via an available real-time state estimation process, and when an islanding condition is detected, causing the grid agent to shed all resources in the shedding list and choose an initial slack based on the rating obtained before the islanding occurrence from the step of rating of all resource agents.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for load profile selection in islanding using batteries are provided herein. A computer-implemented method includes generating a usage pattern model for a battery based on (i) information pertaining to consumers of the battery, (ii) information pertaining to usage of the battery, and (iii) information pertaining to network outages, wherein the network is linked to the battery; selecting a subset of the consumers of the battery to supply energy from the battery, during a network outage, based on (i) the usage pattern model, (ii) the lifespan of the battery, (iii) performance of the network, (iv) historical consumption data attributed to each of the consumers, and (v) a predetermined minimum amount of energy required to be supplied to the consumers during a network outage; and outputting instructions to activate and/or deactivate distribution components within the network based on said selecting.

Abstract: Electrical systems and related operating methods are provided. One exemplary electrical system includes a sensing arrangement coupled to an electrical grid interface to measure an electrical characteristic of the electrical grid interface, a power conversion module having an output coupled to the electrical grid interface, and a control module coupled to the sensing arrangement and the power conversion module. The control module determines a reference value for the electrical characteristic, identifies an islanding condition based on a difference between a value for the electrical characteristic and the reference value, determines a target output value for the power conversion module based on the difference, and in response to the islanding condition, operates the power conversion module to provide the target output value for the electrical characteristic at the output. The target output value reduces the difference while a connection arrangement is being opened to achieve islanding.

Abstract: System and apparatus for electrically coupling a microgrid to and from a power distribution grid. In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises an interconnect device, coupled to the microgrid and the power distribution grid, comprising (i) an overcurrent protection component (OPC) for interrupting a circuit during an overcurrent condition; and (2) a contactor component, coupled in series with the OPC and independently operable from the OPC, comprising (a) a set of contacts movable between a first position and a second position; (b) a first coil energizable to move the set of contacts from the first position into the second position; and (c) a second coil energizable, independently of the first coil, to maintain the contacts in the second position after the first coil is de-energized until a level of current flowing through the set of contacts is less than a lower current level.
