Abstract:
Apparatus and method for drying or curing a coating on a metal substrate including inductivly heating the coated substrate in a highly confined space and condensing the evaporated liquid released as the result of the heating within the confined space at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Ingress of atmospheric gases to the highly confined space is prevented without requiring locks or valves thus enabling a continuous flow of objects from the air into the highly confined space.
Abstract:
An improved process and/or system for coating of a metal strip includes means for continuous travel of the strip and a chamber for substantially completely enclosing the strip beyond an area for application of a mixture of coating and solvent. In that chamber is at least one induction coil for induction heating the strip to drive off the solvent, means for introducing substantially pure nitrogen near opposite ends of the travel of the strip therein and in between the places of introduction of the substantially pure nitrogen means for removing the resultant mixture of nitrogen and solvent which mixture is then at least largely separated into its components and reclaimed nitrogen brought back into the chamber at locations between the location of removal of the mixture and the respective locations of introduction of substantially pure nitrogen. The temperature of the interior atmosphere of the chamber is automatically maintained at a predetermined temperature preferably within the range between about 300.degree. F. and 600.degree. F. and at all events about 300.degree. F. or greater.
Abstract:
Corrosion resistant coatings are applied to metal tubing while substantially continuously moving the metal tubing through a series of stations. The process comprises the sequential steps of flowing by gravity a zinc-rich thermosetting coating suspended in a volatile carrier onto the tubing, the viscosity of the coating composition being such that it flows around and completely covers the external surface of the tubing, removing excess coating by means of an air blower arranged circumferentially around the tubing and sequentially heating the coated tubing first to volatize off the carrier and then more rapidly to crosslink the thermosetting coating composition.
Abstract:
A method of coating metal pipes externally with a uniform thin coating of a synthetic resin, such as a polyamide, polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, which comprises heating the pipe to a temperature to enable a frit of discrete particles to bond to a pipe in a chamber through which the pipe is passed and which is charged with a mixture of a gas and the particles. Thereafter the frit is smoothed by heating the pipe to a higher temperature as it leaves the chamber to cause the particles to coalesce. This is a continuation of application Ser. No. 616,314, file 24 Sept. 1975 and now abandoned.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus if described for the coating of running strands or webs with a thermoplastic protective layer. The successive steps comprise the application of a primer and the hot air current drying and curing of same supplemented by inductive heating. The temperature is next raised in two successive stages by inductive type heaters, the latter stage while the strand or web is vertically traversing the length of a continuouslyreplenished dense cylindrical bed of powdered vinyl polymer of the like. The replenishment as well as cooling of the powder is accomplished through a recirculatory arrangement powered by air nozzles. Alternate coating materials are proposed including polyolefins containing compounds of metal.
Abstract:
An applicator machine and a process for heating and coating a section of pipeline. The applicator machine includes a frame configured to rotate about a section of pipeline to be heated and coated, rotating means operable to rotate the frame, and coating material applicators induction coils and radiant heaters mounted on the frame and rotatable therewith. The induction coil is configured to heat a section of pipeline adjacent to the induction coil to a coating material application temperature. The radiant heaters are configured to heat factory-applied coatings. Each coating material applicator sprays coating material through an aperture in a respective induction coil. The applicator includes an enclosure configured to surround a section of pipeline and provision for evacuating and collecting waste coating material. The coating material applicator may be configured to spray powder coating material, such as fusion bonded epoxy powder material and/or chemically modified polypropylene powder material.
Abstract:
The invention provides a novel method for producing a composite member by fixing a surface member to the outer peripheral surface of a core member. A method for producing a composite member having a core member and a surface member fixed to the outer peripheral surface of the core member includes the surface member providing step of providing the surface member having magnetism lower than magnetism of the core member made of a conductive material on the outer peripheral surface of the core member, and the fusing step of electromagnetic induction heating the core member from outside the surface member to melt at least one of facing regions between the surface member and the core member with heat of the heated core member and fuse the surface member to the core member.
Abstract:
A modular electric induction heating and coating apparatus and method for coating, heating and/or coating and heating (and vice versa) the exterior surface of a pipe section within a pipe treatment region is provided. The apparatus comprises an interchangeable central main frame assembly removably attached to an outer drive frame assembly on each side of the central main frame assembly. An interchangeable induction coil assembly can be mounted in a coil main frame assembly of the central main frame assembly. The coil main frame assembly can close around a pipe section for electric induction heating of the pipe section within the pipe treatment region via a driver system in a central top drive frame assembly. The outer drive frame assemblies include mounting and rotational drive assemblies for interchangeable coating head cartridges that can coat the section of the pipe in the pipe treatment region.
Abstract:
An induction heater includes an electrically conductive coil that produces an alternating magnetic field when current is applied to the coil. The magnetic field is used to heat metal containers such as tubular containers. The coil extends about a heating path of travel that extends along the longitudinal axis of the coil. A transport device is provided to move the container through the magnetic field such that the longitudinal axis of the container is generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the coil. This allows for heating the container at the twelve and six o'clock positions. The transport device functions to roll the container along the heating path. In a preferred embodiment, the coil is wrapped about a core with a generally rectangular shape. Ferromagnetic members may optionally be used to further shape the magnetic field. The methods and apparatus may be used for regular or irregularly shaped containers.
