Abstract:
A composite cable (10) including a tubular core (12), an outer textile fiber sheath (22) and at least one intermediate layer of a textile material (16, 18) disposed between a tubular core (12) and the outer sheath (22).
Abstract:
A flexible abrasion resistant water shedding omnidirectionally reflective rope has a central low-density polymeric closed cell foam core comprising EPDM, Neoprene, SBR, NBR, EVA, PVC, PVC/NBR foam surrounded by cylindrically braided sleeve of reflective strips composed of narrow width reflective strips that comprise a woven or knitted narrow width strip and a flexible nylon retroreflective sheet sewn thereon and covered with abrasion resistant water shedding coating. The flexible retroreflective sheet is formed by thermally bonding corner cube, microsphere retroreflectors, or wide angle exposed retroreflective lenses to a flexible polymeric sheet. Due to its low-density foam core construction, the reflective rope floats on water and sheds water from the surface preserving omnidirectional reflectivity. The rope reflects light omnidirectionally over a large angle of acceptance and provides accurate illumination of the rope floating in water, location of a rope wound buoy and the like when used during dusk, fog or nighttime hours.
Abstract:
A colored suture includes an elongate woven braid of filaments including one or more ends made of an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The suture also includes second and third ends which can be colorable or dyeable before or after incorporation into the elongate woven braid. This invention provides surgeons with improved recognition of suture ends in surgery by construction of a bi-colored co-braid with at least two ends of different color schemes or patterns braided into a UHMWPE construction. One of the colored ends runs continuously from one end of the suture to the other end. The other colored end can be colored only on one half of the end. This provides a suture with two distinguishable ends, while still maintaining a continuous line of color along the length of the suture.
Abstract:
The present invention may be embodied as a line structure for use as a mud line assembly. In this case, the line structure comprises a plurality of strands, and each of the strands comprises a core portion, a jacket portion, and a barrier portion. The barrier portion is arranged between the core portion and the jacket portion to inhibit movement of contaminate material into the core portion.
Abstract:
Mesh bars (35, 283) of a trawl (13, 263) include at least a portion having a corkscrew-shaped pitch which exhibits a hydrofoil-like effect. Such mesh bars (35, 283) are preferably formed from a material having a substantially incompressible cross-sectional shape. By appropriately selecting the lay and leading edge of mesh bars (35, 283), movement of the trawl (13, 263) through the water entrained environment creates a pressure differential and lift across that portion of mesh bars (25, 283) which exhibit the hydrofoil-like effect. The lift thus created increases performance characteristics of the trawl (13, 263) including increased trawl volume, improved trawl shape, and reduced vibration, noise, and drag. Obtaining the greatest improvement of trawls (13, 263) requires controlling a pitch range for twisted product strands (e.g. twisted ropes) (36, 37), and for straps (284) forming mesh bars (35, 283). For straps (284), control of a width to thickness ratio also significantly affects performance of the trawl (13, 263).
Abstract:
A new form of construction for synthetic cables used for the anchoring of floating platforms in offshore oil production is described. A desirable requisite for this application is that the durability of the cable is not affected by deterioration of its strong core by virtue of the aggressive mechanical action of particles of the sea bed which might penetrate the cable and reach its core. For this purpose a layer (2) to protect the core (1) comprising a strip of polymer material placed in helical fashion which permits the passage of water and prevents the passage of particles of the sea bed towards the core (1) is placed between the cable core (1) and its outer braided protective layer (2).
Abstract:
Well tools are run into a well, usually a deviated well, using a composite wireline cable made up of a bundle of parallel slidable composite rods and electrical or optical conductors covered with a flexible protective sheath. The cable is stored on a spool and from there it is run into and retrieved from the well.
Abstract:
This invention is a cut resistant article comprising a cut resistant jacket surrounding a less cut resistant member. The jacket comprises a fabric of yarn and the yarn consists essentially of a high strength, longitudinal strand having a tensile strength of at least 1 GPa. The strand is wrapped with another fiber or the same fiber.
Abstract:
A composite fishing line comprising a core and braided jacket the core being made of material which will break under a predetermined tensile loading of the line, said braided jacket being made of a different material which does not break under said predetermined tensile loading and having a braid tightness which permits reoccurrent breaks in the core under the reoccurrence of said tensile loading without affecting the utilization of the line.
Abstract:
An integrated string primarily for use in connection with athletic rackets, such as tennis, badminton, squash and the like, but also usable for fishing line, musical strings, etc., said string in one embodiment comprising a thermoplastic core having a thermoplastic sheath covering same and integrated thereto, said core material and said sheath comprising strands therein having substantially different melting points, and in a second embodiment said string consisting of a braided sheath, with no inner core, said sheath comprising thermoplastic strands having substantially different melting points.
