An advertisement data store maintains advertisements that have been displayed for viewing and/or information corresponding to the displayed advertisements. The advertisement data store provides advertisers with an advertising model to selectively reach potential customers and clients, and provides viewers with additional information about a particular product and/or service after having viewed an advertisement of interest. A viewer can reference the information maintained in the advertisement data store without interrupting a current television program and without missing other advertisements that may be of interest to the viewer.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a method and system for identifying commercial message segments of a video signal. A set of rules is applied for determining the occurrence of commercial messages with a higher degree of accuracy as compared to conventional methods. In general, method includes the steps of monitoring a digital bit stream comprising the video signal, detecting a change in a control field of the digital bit stream, and then selectively generating a commercial event notification responsive to the detecting step. According to one aspect of the invention, a change in at least one of a video sequence header and a sequence display extension can be detected. Alternatively, or in addition to checking for a change in control field, the method can comprise the step of detecting a change in an informational parameter of the video signal exclusive of the audio-visual content.

The invention relates to the classification of such parts of television signals which are commercials so that those parts can be eliminated during recording or playback. Known methods for the detection of commercials during a TV program suffer from the drawbacks that one or two features of the TV signals are observed to decide whether the TV signal is part of a commercial or not. In the present invention of a method and apparatus, a classification of TV signals results on a plurality of information gathered from the TV signals and a plurality of rules using a rule system. Such a rule system permits the modeling of uncertainties so that for the definition of the rules, no strict values or strict limits need be given. In particular, fuzzy rules and linguistic variables are used.

A method and apparatus for automatically identifying a program broadcast by a radio station or by a television channel, or recorded on a medium, by adding an inaudible encoded message to the sound signal of the program, the message identifying the broadcasting channel or station, the program, and/or the exact date. In one embodiment the sound signal is transmitted via an analog-to-digital converter to a data processor enabling frequency components to be split up, enabling the energy in some of the frequency components to be altered in a predetermined manner to form an encoded identification message, and with the output from the data processor being connected via a digital-to-analog converter to an audio output for broadcasting or recording the sound signal. In another embodiment, an analog bandpass filter is employed to separate a band of frequencies from the sound signal so that energy in the separated band may be thus altered to encode the sound signal. The invention is particularly applicable to measuring the audiences of programs that are broadcast by radio or television, or that are recorded.

In a broadcasting network, programs are distributed to targeted customer premises equipment. A first program source generates first segments of the program, the first segments having a first identified content. A second program source generates second segments of the program, the second segments having a second identified content. Some of the second segments are generated concurrently to have different second identified content. The segments are transported over the network to the customer premises equipment. While being transported, the segments are selectively merged to form the program. The program having temporally adjacent segments. The signals of the merged first and second segments are synchronized to a common time base, and the selection is responsive to identities of the first and second identified content of the program, and demographics of the network and customer premises equipment.

The instructions, when executed, cause the processor to receive a first signal from a first external electronic device through the communication module while a communication connection to at least one second external electronic device is being established, select a specified number of third external electronic devices or less from among the first external electronic device and the at least one second external electronic device based on the first signal, and transmit data to or receive data from the selected third external electronic devices through established communication connections to the selected third external electronic devices. The third external electronic devices are selected in order of having a weak signal intensity or a greater distance from the electronic device from among the first external electronic device and the at least one second external electronic device.
