A system is described for buying materials or services by transferring funds in a bank from a buyer''s deposit account to a seller''s account. The transfer of funds is accomplished by means of a ''''touch-tone'''' telephone receiving set equipped with a first decoding and printing means. A computer at the bank receives coded signals from the telephone set and, after decoding the signals, records the transaction at that location. Each purchaser is provided with a secret purchaser number on a telephone operating card and the entire operation is performed in the presence of the purchaser and a representative of the seller or store.

A telegraphic transmission system for the transmission of series of bits of the same number in which each series of bits to be transmitted is divided into two groups. The transmitter of the system comprises coding devices assigning to each even combination of bits of the first group of each series of bits a frequency chosen in a first group of frequencies for transmitting such frequency during a first moment, and assigning to each even combination of bits of the second group of each series of bits a frequency chosen in a second group of frequencies for transmitting such frequency during a second moment following the first moment and of the same duration. The coding devices assign to each odd combination of bits of the first group of each series of bits a frequency chosen in the second group of frequencies for transmitting such frequency during the first moment, and assign to each odd combination of bits of the second group of each series of bits a frequency chosen in the first group of frequencies for transmitting such frequency during the second moment. The receiver comprises a switching device operated by a pilot clock at the rate of the moments of transmission, two identical frequency selectors to which the switching device alternatively applies the signals received by a detector associated with each selector, and a decoding device connected to both selectors for regrouping the two groups of the series of bits.

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described that provide for generating a multicarrier wakeup signal that is modulated using multiple on-off keying (OOK) patterns. In some cases, the OOK pattern may be constructed using one or more of the following techniques: forward error correction (FEC) coding, spreading, encoding (e.g., DC balance encoding such as Manchester encoding), and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) overlay mapping. The resulting signal may serve to increase the sensitivity of the receiver. The OOK patterns may include on portions and off portions that are indicative of different bit values, such as a one bit or a zero bit. The multicarrier wakeup signal may be decoded by a first radio of a wireless device that compares the energy of the signal over different time periods to determine the bit value. Once determined, the wireless device may choose to activate a second radio for communication.

Various aspects described herein relate to distinguishing frequency shift keying (FSK) signals transmitted by each user of multiple users in a wireless communications system. One or more symbols for transmitting in an FSK-modulated signal can be obtained by a user. The one or more symbols can be encoded based on a tone location assignment corresponding to a unique spreading code associated with the user. Quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and/or phase-shift keying (PSK) can be performed over at least one tone associated with the encoded symbols. Each user can transmit the encoded symbols to a receiving entity, where the receiving entity can decode each symbol received from the plurality of users to produce a distinguishable symbol for each user based on the unique spreading codes associated with each user.
