摘要:
A fuel flow control system which, in response to the true mass of air entering the throttle body of an engine, provides a regulated flow of fuel to the throttle body, thereby delivering the optimum mass fuel-air ratio to the engine and maintaining idealized engine performance. The air flow rate drawn through the throttle body by the engine is monitored along with air temperature and pressure, and an electronic control circuit computes the true mass of air and the ideal fuel flow rate which will produce the optimum mass fuel-air ratio. The circuit generates a command signal to a novel fuel flow regulating assembly which adjusts the fuel flow in response to the command signal. The regulating assembly includes a control valve positionable in response to the command signal and a pressure differential mechanism movably responsive to the control valve position. A fuel flow metering valve in turn is positioned by the pressure differential mechanism. A fuel flowmeter is included to measure the actual fuel flow rate delivered to the throttle body and a feedback signal generated from the flowmeter to the control circuit further aids in accurately positioning the metering valve and thereby insures correct fuel delivery to the engine.

A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine employs a relatively low pressure pump to provide fuel to injectors located at the engine cylinders. A booster device for maintaining the fluid pressure constant, at a substantially higher level, is connected in series with the line between the pump and the injector and includes one way valves at its inlet and outlet. The booster employs a chamber connected to the fuel line and pressurized by a piston which acts to contract the chamber volume under the force of the coil spring. The piston is cocked against the spring at regular intervals to renew the original volume of the chamber by an arm driven from the engine crankshaft. Sealed volume converters having flexible diaphragm walls are disposed adjacent to the inlet and outlet of the booster device and in the fluid conduit adjacent the injectors to obviate sharp drops in the fluid pressure in the fuel line when the injectors actuate.

A plurality of sensors generate signals representing engine parameters indicative of the engine fuel requirement. These signals are all applied to a single function generator to form a composite signal that is a nonlinear function of the engine fuel requirement. One of the sensors responds to absolute intake manifold pressure; responsive to this sensor, operation is inhibited, while the absolute intake manifold pressure is below a predetermined value representative of engine deceleration. An engine starter switch generates a trigger pulse to actuate an overriding multivibrator that overrides normal operation as the engine is started. One of the sensors also responds to engine coolant temperature; responsive to this sensor, the actuation duration of the overriding multivibrator is controlled in reverse relation to the coolant temperature. A manual switch, which generates a trigger pulse responsive to closing, is coupled to the overriding multivibrator to with actuate it responsive to each trigger pulse generated by the switch.

A circuit for energizing a fuel injector valve coil in response to a fuel injection pulse including a storage capacitor which is charged from a relatively high voltage source and which is discharged through the fuel injector valve coil through a controlled rectifier gated conductive upon the initiation of a fuel injection pulse signal. The charging circuit for the capacitor is disabled upon initiation of capacitor discharge for a time period at least greater than the time for the capacitor discharge current to decrease to a value to effect commutation of the controlled rectifier after which capacitor charging is reinitiated. A holding circuit is provided for holding the fuel injector valve coil energized for the duration of the fuel injection pulse signal.

A control system for a positive displacement, electrically actuated fuel pump receives one trigger pulse per engine cycle during normal operating conditions and a plurality of pulses per cycle during starting conditions from a computer circuit forming part of a fuel injection system. A control circuit generates one driving pulse for the fuel pump for each trigger pulse as long as the period between the pulses remains sufficient for the pump to complete its cycle and deletes control pulses to the pump when the engine speed is excessively high. A variable displacement electric pump is controlled to provide the engine with a fuel flow proportional to its operating rate by a variable on-time switching system controlled by an engine speed sensor and/or load sensor.

A fuel injection system for multi cylinder engine employs a plurality of separate computing circuits for generating variable width control pulses to fuel injectors. Each channel actuates at least one fuel injector during more than 50% of an engine cycle. To derive the start times for these four pulses, a counter is advanced in timed relation to the operation of the engine by pulses from the ignition primary circuit. To control the phase of the firing pulses relative to the cycle time of the engine the counter is reset once each engine cycle by a pulse derived from one of the spark plug leads.

A closed loop, electronically controlled and regulated fuel metering system for operating an internal combustion engine in accordance with a predetermined mass fuel-air ratio scheduled in the controller for different engine operating conditions. Linear air flow and fuel flow measuring devices and transducers responsive to selected ambient fluid and engine operating parameters develop electrical signals, which are related to the air flow rate and fuel flow rate and are modified in accordance with the sensed ambient parameters and a programmed signal from the scheduler representing the fuel-air ratio according to which it is desired to operate the engine over its range of operation. The modified fuel and air signals are electrically combined to balance the controller which operates a fuel metering or supply device to deliver a quantum of fuel precisely in accordance with the desired mass fuel-air ratio scheduled in the controller for said different engine operating conditions over the entire range of engine operation and ambient fluid parameter variations.

The operation of an internal combustion engine is regulated by an electronic regulation circuit which utilizes suction pipe pressure to modulate the width of a pulsed signal and to vary the amplitude of a sawtooth wave signal in accordance with the duration of said pulsed signal so that the fuel injection to the engine may be controlled as desired under all operating conditions. The regulation circuitry includes apparatus for modifying the slope of the time versus pressure characteristic of the suction pipe transducer to account for the differences between full load and no load torque of the engine. This is accomplished byvarying the amplitude of the sawtooth waveforms by shunting a portion of the charging current to the sawtooth generator in accordance with the load conditions on the engine.

An electronic fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine wherein the amount of fuel injected is metered according to variations in the injection pressure. Mechanical injectors having a preset opening pressure are fed from a distribution chamber which, in turn, is fed by a fuel circuit pressurized by by an electronically controlled fuel supply flow. The fuel supply flow is the difference between the flow through an inlet injector receiving fuel under pressure and that through an outlet injector regulating the return flow of fuel to the reservoir, these injectors being of the continuous flow electromagnetic type. The fuel supply is frequency controlled by a computer and regulated by a servo loop to assure a constant richness. The preferred embodiment is particularly adaptable to a low priced electronic fuel injection system using mechanical devices whose precision is relatively unimportant.
