Abstract: A tension member for an elevator system has an aspect ratio of greater than one, where aspect ratio is defined as the ratio of tension member width w to thickness t (w/t). The increase in aspect ratio results in a reduction in the maximum rope pressure and an increased flexibility as compared to conventional elevator ropes. As a result, smaller sheaves may be used with this type of tension member. In a particular embodiment, the tension member includes a plurality of individual load carrying ropes encased within a common layer of coating. The coating layer separates the individual ropes and defines an engagement surface for engaging a traction sheave.

Abstract: Composite reinforcements (100, 100A, 100B, 100C) are formed by combining a first plurality of continuous fibers (102) with a second plurality of continuous fibers (106) with the first and second pluralities of continuous fibers (102, 106) being impregnated with at least one appropriate resin material (R1, R2, R3) and pultruded to form the reinforcements. The first and second pluralities of continuous fibers (102, 106) can be intermixed with one another or combined as a central core (104, 132) of the first fibers with a jacket (108, 108A, 108B, 134) formed by the second fibers. In either event, the combined fibers are formed as an elongated rod (110) and rigidified using the resin material. The first fibers are glass, either E-glass or S-2 glass, with the second fibers being either carbon, aramid, S-2 glass or AR-glass. The composite reinforcements of the present application, formed by combining these materials, have characteristics very similar to steel under tensile loading but with superior corrosion resistance and less detrimental deterioration characteristics.

Abstract: In making synthetic rope or cable, a plurality of filaments are brought in parallelism into a core and compacted by a plurality of ribbons or tapes wound about the core under tension in opposite directions to form a uniform jacket that is torsionally stable. An outer sheath which may be urethane or other plastic material is applied to the jacket under sufficient pressure to penetrate the jacket but not the core, and then the urethane is cured. The rope or cable of the invention has a core of substantially parallel filaments free to move within the jacket of ribbons wound about the core and penetrated with the urethane or other plastic material. The method affords many advantages in speed of manufacture and cost, and provides a rope or cable of greater tensile strength and flexibility than other rope or cable constructions.

Abstract: A high-strength rope, strand or yarn includes a core component, such as a fiber or a plurality thereof, of elastic synthetic plastic material, the core component having a predetermined length. A plurality of envelope components surrounds the core component and includes filaments of high tensile strength synthetic plastic material, the filaments being of substantially equal length exceeding the predetermined length. The envelope components may be in form of strands or yarns, each including a plurality of high tensile strength filaments. The rope may be soaked with flexible wear-resistant material, and a jacket of flexible, wear-resistant synthetic plastic material may surround the rope or the strands, yarns or filaments which constitute the same.

Abstract: A flyline for fishing which comprises a core with a plurality of individual coatings, each containing microballoons and in certain instances, other fillers being applied thereover. The core comprises a generally continuous filament extending axially along the length of the line. A first coating is arranged over the core, with the first coating comprising a plastic matrix retaining a certain quantity of microballoons therein. The second coating is arranged over the first coating and comprises a plastic matrix retaining a different quantity of microballoons, with the microballoons in the second coating being smaller in diameter, and being included in a lesser percentage than in the first coating so as to provide a composite line with significant buoyancy determined primarily by the inner coating and with a finish determined by a harder and more dense outer shell. While the first or inner coating is normally of constant wall thickness, the second or outer coating may be tapered so as to provide a tapered diameter line.
