A battery module includes a battery cell stack having a plurality of battery cells or unit modules connected in series and/or in parallel to each other in a state in which the battery cells or the unit modules are stacked in the lateral direction. The battery cell stack is provided at the front thereof with bus bars to connect electrode terminals of the battery cells to external input and output terminals. Voltage sensing members are provided at ends thereof with connection terminals electrically connected to electrode terminal connection parts of the battery cells to sense voltages of the battery cells or the unit modules. An upper case is provided with mounting parts, in which the voltage sensing members are mounted. A lower case is coupled to the upper. The lower case is provided at the front thereof with external input and output terminals.

Disclosed is a battery module including a base plate on which unit modules, each with two or more secondary batteries therein, are stacked in a vertically erected state, a pair of end plates disposed in tight contact with outer surfaces of outermost unit modules while bottoms of the end plates are fixed to the base plate, and supporting bars connected between opposite sides of upper or side parts of the end plates so as to support the end plates, wherein each of the end plates includes a main body contacting a corresponding one of the unit modules, and a top wall, a bottom wall, and a pair of side walls protruding outward from the perimeter of the main body, the thickness of each of the side walls being increased from the top to the bottom wall, thereby dispersing pressure (bending load) from the unit modules and the supporting bars.

The present invention provides nano-sized particles of melanin, and the method for formation of the melanin particles comprise the following steps: adding a base to a dopamine.H+X−-containing solution (wherein H+X− is an acid) and allowing an acid-base neutralization reaction; and forming nano-sized particles of melanin by controlling the addition of nucleic dopamine.H+X− to base (b) at a ratio of a:b=1:0.1-1, and allow concurrent or consecutive formation of melanin by oxidation curing of the dopamine in air (polymerization). The manufacturing method according to the present invention can produce nano-sized melanin particles in a short period of time. Furthermore, the nano-sized melanin particles made according to the present invention are distinctive from conventional solvents containing dispersions of natural melanin and synthetic melanin, and have excellent application in various fields.

Disclosed herein is a middle or large-sized battery pack including a battery module assembly configured in a structure in which a plurality of battery modules, each of which comprises a plurality of battery cells or unit modules connected in series to each other while being mounted in a module case, is electrically connected to each other while being arranged in a lateral direction such that the battery modules are in contact with each other, a pair of side support members for covering sides of outermost battery modules of the battery module assembly, and at least one top connection member for connecting the side support members at a top of the battery module assembly, wherein at least one of the side support members has a region (weak portion) exhibiting low resistance to volume expansion, the weak portion being partially formed at the at least one of the side support members for inducing local deformation of the battery modules upon occurrence of swelling, thereby causing a short circuit.
