    摘要: A chemical dispensing system for dispensing a liquid chemical agent, such as an antibiotic, anesthetic, growth factor, hormone, anti=neoplastic agent, or the like, onto or into a site of a surgical procedure. The system includes at least one bladder having an internal cavity that connects to an open tube wherethrough the liquid chemical agent is passed, under pressure, into the bladder. The liquid chemical agent passes, as a low volume flow, through at least one hole formed through a bladder wall and onto the surgical procedure site. Embodiments of the invention include one or a pair of individual bladders formed from a thin flexible biocompatible material, each for positioning in close proximity to a prepared bone surface with a plurality of holes formed through the bladder surface that is in engagement with the prepared bone surface to bleed a low volume flow of a chemical agent onto the bone surface; a bladder for fitting into and to travel along a longitudinal passage of an intramedullary rod or nail to a location therealong that is adjacent to the surgical procedure site for delivering a volume of the liquid chemical agent onto that site; and a fixation device that includes at least one hollow pin for passing a volume of the liquid chemical agent therethrough directly into or onto a bone proximate to a fracture therein.

    摘要: An implantable linear actuator device for use in orthopedic correction procedures, the device comprising a housing including a first tubular portion and a second tubular portion, the second tubular portion slidably received in telescoping relationship within the first tubular portion; and a drive mechanism secured within the housing and connected between the first and second tubular portions, the drive mechanism including a main screw shaft rotatably journalled at one end in the first tubular portion and threadably connected at an opposite end to the second tubular portion; a one-way rotatable clutch engageable with the main screw shaft such that rotation of the clutch in one direction will effect rotation of the main screw shaft in the one direction but rotation of the clutch in an opposite direction will not rotate the main screw shaft; and a shape memory alloy component fixed between the clutch and the first tubular portion such that, upon application of heat, the component causes the clutch and the screw shaft to rotate in the one direction.

    摘要: An implantable intramedullary bone lengthening device for correction of limb length deficiencies without a need for transcutaneous connections. The implantable intramedullary bone lengthening nail has an implantable housing, an adjustment mechanism attached to the telescoping cylinder housing, and a drive assembly attached to the housing and the adjustment mechanism for transmitting an expansion force to the adjustment mechanism. The implantable housing may be sealed, encapsulating the unit. The intramedullary bone lengthening nail is inserted into the intramedullary cavity of a bone, which may have been enlarged by reaming. The implantable housing of the intramedullary nail is formed from two telescoping cylinders and is affixed at either end to the bone using pins. The adjustment mechanism is attached to both cylinders of the housing and includes a mechanism for expanding the nail and a ratcheting mechanism for regulating the expansion. The drive assembly includes a shape memory alloy to provide an expansion force. The drive mechanism transmits the expansion force in response to an external signal to the adjustment mechanism.

    摘要: Both a bone fixation device and a method for retrofitting this device in a conventional hollow, intramedullary nail are disclosed herein. The bone fixation device of the invention generally comprises at least one blade member having a top portion registrable with a blade slot provided in the body of the nail, and a bottom surface including a rail slot, as well as at least one wedge member having an inclined top surface for transmitting a blade extending force to the bottom surface of the blade member, as well as a rail which is slidably engageable with the blade member slot. The blade slot and wedge rail interlock to provide a positive retracting force on the blade when it is desired to remove the nail from a bone. Additionally, the wedge member includes a key which interlocks with the longitudinal slot which extends along the longitudinal axis of a conventional Kuntscher intramedullary nail in order to facilitate angular alignment of the blade member with the blade receiving slot in the nail.

    摘要: A first plurality of concavo-convex disks are slidably received on one end of a bolt and inserted in the medullary cavity of one section of a fractured bone. The concave side of each disk is oriented toward the fracture site. A second group of concavo-convex disks are mounted on a threaded collar and inserted in the second section of the bone with their concave sides oriented toward the fracture site. The bolt is threadedly engaged with the threaded collar. An aperture is drilled through the bone wall in the vicinity of the bolt head. The bolt is turned thus drawing the two pairs of concavo-convex disks together producing axial pressure against the bone halves to draw the fracture tightly together. Each disk also includes a plurality of radially extending grooves for allowing normal marrow activity after the bone has healed.

    摘要: An elongated sleeve is insertable into a passage provided in a fractured bone, so as to bridge the fracture thereof. The front end of the sleeve carries an expansion anchor sleeve which is longitudinally slotted so that its circumferential wall is composed of strips which are connected only at the leading and trailing ends. The strips are buckled in radially outward direction by inserting a rod through the sleeve and connecting it with the leading end of the expansion anchor sleeve so as to exert a rearwardly directed tensile force upon the same, causing its buckling.
