Abstract:
A device for the application of a liquid or viscous coating medium onto a moving fiber material web, specifically a paper or cardboard web, includes an applicator unit, a first backing element which is assigned to the applicator unit and around at least a portion of the circumference of which the fiber material web travels, a leveling and/or metering device, and a second backing element which is assigned to the leveling and/or metering device and around at least a portion of the circumference of which the fiber material web travels. The surface characteristics of the first backing element and the second backing element are matched to each other so that the fiber material web—under the influence of the drive by the second backing element—may move relative to the first backing element.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an applicator for direct or indirect application of a coating medium onto a traveling material web, notably of paper or cardboard, including a dosing apparatus with a dosing slot configured as an open-jet nozzle and formed between two lips. The applicator also includes a coating edge delimiting apparatus with at least two coating edge delimiting elements that are arranged between the two lips and close off the dosing slot on its side edges, substantially sealing it.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for the controlled placement of a shear-thinnable polymer composition into a moving web. The controlled placement is preferably performed by applying the polymer composition onto a surface of a moving web, shear thinning the composition and placing it into the web, and curing the polymer composition. A preferred apparatus includes one or more process heads that has mounted thereto a rigid knife blade for engagement with the moving web. The knife blade is movable vertically and rotationally. The process head is also movable horizontally along the path of the moving web. A plurality of macro and micro tension zones are established and are monitored for controlling the apparatus and process. Additional measurements of web density, micro porosity, placement of an internal layer of polymer within the web, analysis of elements on the treated web, and the size of the polymer bead applied to the moving web are measured for controlling online the apparatus and the process of this invention. This method and apparatus produces webs that either has some of its structural elements encapsulated by the polymer composition while at least some of the interstitial spaces of the web are open; or has an internal layer extending through the web in a direction generally spaced from at least one major surface thereof; or has both encapsulated structural elements and an internal layer of polymer composition.
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a coating apparatus for the direct or indirect application of a liquid or pasty substance onto a moving layer of material, such as paper, carton or cardboard, with a dispenser implement and, at some distance further along the line, a spreading device for finely controlling the amount of applied medium. The dispenser implement and the spreading device share a common collector/drain surface and a common collector bin for gathering excess amounts of the liquid or pasty substance.
Abstract:
Products and methods for controlling the porosity and permeation of a web are provided using a curable thixotropic shear thinnable polymer composition that preferably encapsulates a plurality of fibers of the web and/or forms an internal layer within the web. Webs suitable for several different uses are featured, for example medical garments resistant to permeation by a virus or bacteria. The effective pore size of the web is controlled by regulating various factors such as the thickness of the polymer composition encapsulating the fibers and the thickness and placement of the internal polymer layer. Other factors include the polymer density, structure, and crosslinking orientation, as well as the diffusion, permeation and sorption of the polymer.
Abstract:
A device for the coating of a travelling web (7), preferably a paper web, comprising a back-up element (3), a metering means (9) cooperating therewith and intended for the application onto the web (7) across essentially the full width thereof a coating liquid (13), a coating blade (17) positioned downstream of the metering means (9), and means for feeding the web (9) in the nip between the back-up element (3) and the metering means (9) and between the back-up element (3) and the coating blade (17). The device further comprises at least one edge lubricating means (27) which is positioned adjacent to one edge (43) of the web and upstream of the metering means (9), and which is arranged to deposit along said one edge (43) a string of lubricating liquid at least up to a position cross-wise and inwardly of the web adjacent to the margin of the coating liquid (13) when applied, whereby uneven wear of the coating blade (17) is avoided; and a process for the coating of a travelling web.
Abstract:
A die coating apparatus includes a die having an upstream bar with an upstream lip and a downstream bar with a downstream lip. The upstream lip is formed as a land and the downstream lip is formed as a sharp edge. A low surface energy covering is applied to the surface of the downstream bar adjacent to the sharp edge, and to the surface of the land, adjacent to its downstream edge. This presents a generally undulating surface. The low surface energy coverings need not extend completely to the edges of the downstream bar and the land.

Abstract:
Air entrained within the pond of a coating applicator is influenced toward a designated region for removal. The region is formed by a recessed air collector which sets up a high-recirculation, low-pressure zone within the pond. Entrained air bubbles migrate to the collector. The collected air and excess coating is drawn out of the collector cavity by a plurality of perforations which discharge to a collection cavity at a lower pressure or partial vacuum. The collector structure may be employed in various coater/size press configurations.
Abstract:
A short dwell coater apparatus is disclosed for applying coating material to a web supported by a backing member. The apparatus includes a housing which defines an application zone having an upstream and a downstream end. The application zone extends in a cross-machine direction across the web and is connected to a source of the coating material such that the coating material is applied to the web during movement of the web past the application zone. An elongate pipe is disposed within the application zone and extends in a cross-machine direction across the application zone. The pipe defines at least one orifice for the passage therethrough of the coating material. The pipe is connected to the source of coating material such that the coating material flows through the pipe and through the orifice for supplying coating material to the application zone. A vane is rigidly secured to the pipe and extends in a machine direction away from the pipe towards the web such that coating material supplied through the orifice generates a hydrodynamic wedge between the vane and the web for reducing entrained air vortices within the application zone. A metering blade is disposed adjacent to the downstream end of the application zone for metering excess coating from the web.
