Abstract:
In a method of drawing and wall ironing a can body, a blank (1) is cut from a laminate of aluminium or alloy and a polyester film. The blank is lubricated and drawn to a cup (7) having a side wall (8), which is then wall ironed. A terminal margin (14) of the side wall (13) of the wall ironed can is heated to a temperature above 100.degree. C. but below the crystalline melting point of the polyester film in order to prevent delamination of the polyester film from the side wall of the can during subsequent washing of the can. A benefit of the process is that the heating of the side wall margin (14) does not soften the aluminium or aluminium alloy body.

In the production of a thickness-reduced draw-formed can by draw-redraw forming and bending elongation, by using a laminated metal plate comprising a metal plate and a coating layer of a thermoplastic resin having a tension of from 1.times.10.sup.7 to 8.times.10.sup.8 dyne/cm.sup.2 under an elongation of 200% at a temperature of the glass transition point plus 20.degree. C., carrying out redraw forming at a temperature at which the dynamic friction coefficient of the thermoplastic resin is smaller than 0.5 and which is higher than the glass transition point and carrying out bending elongation of the side wall of the can simultaneously with redraw forming, high reduction of the thickness of bending elongation and improvement of the corrosion resistance of the resin-coated vessel can be simultaneously attained.

Abstract:
Composite-coated flat-rolled steel can stock processing and product for fabrication of sheet metal cans, in particular for three-piece, welded or cemented side seam cans. Single or double-reduced, low carbon, flat-rolled steel of a gage in the range of about 55 to 110 pounds per base box is flash coated with tin (0.05 #/bb), which is alloyed with the steel base metal; at least 0.20 #/bb of tin is added to one surface only, flow brightened and water quenched; chemical treatment chrome oxide coating of about 100 to 750 milligrams per square foot is added to both surfaces and an organic coating of 2.5 to 15 milligrams per square inch is added to the surface which is free of flow-brightened tin for disposition internally of a can fabricated from such coated can stock. The equivalent of quarter-pound and higher coating weight tinplate protection is provided while decreasing tin requirements and maintaining three-piece can fabrication properties not available with coating metal substitutes for tin.
Abstract:
An improved sheet steel suitable for the production of containers and the like has a thin composite coating of nickel and zinc plated on both sides thereof. The steel substrate may be flat rolled blackplate and the composite nickel-zinc coating may be plated thereon by drawing a running length or strip of the steel through a nickel electroplating bath to which has been added the necessary concentration of zinc, and electrodepositing the two coating metals simultaneously and in the desired proportions. The coated steel sheet is particularly useful in forming drawn and ironed cans although it may be used for other purposes.
Abstract:
A steel sheet container wherein the bottom wall is integral with the body and wherein the container is formed by a drawing operation with there being three drawings of the metal in sequence. Most particularly, the steel sheet has on the opposite surfaces thereof a coating of tin with the surfaces of the steel sheet being very smooth so as to permit the formation of the tin with a matte finish. The finish of the steel sheet should range generally from on the order of 10 microinch minimum to 30 microinch maximum.
Abstract:
A stock material for producing seamless containers from a black plate base includes applying a layer of insoluble crystalline phosphate to each surface of the black plate and subsequently producing a thin film of organic lubricating material on the exposed surfaces of the phosphate layers so that a drawn and ironed container can be produced from a flat blank without the use of any additional lubricants during fabrication. The weight of the phosphate layer for each surface of the black plate base is preferably less than 100 milligrams per square foot, while the weight of lubricating film is on the order of 70 to 360 milligrams per square foot. In the preferred embodiment, the phosphate layer is preferably in the range of 20 to 35 milligrams per square foot, and the lubricant layer is on the order of 70 to 180 milligrams per square foot.
Abstract:
A process for producing thermoformed articles from thin-walled blanks composed of aluminum or magnesium alloys, the present invention particularly provides for forming a layer of alumina or magnesia on the surfaces of the respective aluminum or magnesium blank. The alumina or magnesia layers so formed are artificially formed in order to obtain desired thicknesses, the regular layers allowing ready removal of the articles from thermoforming molds. The present process is particularly intended for the production of thin-wall packaging members and motor vehicle components.
Abstract:
A complex film is formed on a steel sheet by coating thereto an aqueous solution of ammonium phosphate, ammonium molybdate, nickel aceptate, etc., heating the same and further coating a lubrication oil containing an animal or vegetable oil or fat or a mineral oil with a high molecular compound and a higher fatty acid, whereby a steel sheet showing excellent lubricity in ironing is given. The effect can be improved by adding cobalt, nickel, chrome salts to the aqueous solutions.
Abstract:
A coated metal sheet adapted for use in producing a drawn and ironed can body. This sheet is coated with a coating composition film completely cured on it, the coating composition consisting of epoxy-phenolic resin prepared by condensing thermosetting type phenol resin with bisphenol epoxy resin-A and olefin type hydrocarbon added thereto in an amount of 0.5 to 2.0 weight percent. This coated metal sheet has excellent drawing and ironing formability and the coating film thereof shows excellent adhesion and coating integrity.
